Even though summer is not officially here yet, the days have been very warm lately, so we've been enjoying some tinto de verano, Spanish wine cocktail. Prepare a tinto de verano this weekend and see how refreshing this cold wine cocktail is, and why it's popular all over Spain in the summer. We recommend them for summer celebrations, including graduation parties and Father's day. Be sure to make it with lots of ice!
...

Fresh shrimp sauteed in a bit of olive oil are irresistible when accompanied by the garlicky green mojo sauce, made with fresh cilantro, garlic, oil and vinegar. Ready in about 20 minutes, this is a very tasty tapa, which also makes a dramatic presentation with the contrasting colors. Serve with mojo drizzled over the shrimp, or on the side for dipping. We like to dip bread in the extra mojo.
...

May 15th is San Isidro or Saint Isidore's feast day. He is the patron saint of Madrid and his feast is a big celebration in Madrid. The annual fiesta or feria of San Isidro officially lasts from May 8 to May 15, but can extend for two weeks or more. A big part of the festival is the series of bullfights, in addition to concerts, dances and the romeria, (a kind of pilgrimage) to the ermita de San Isidro.
...

Mother's Day in the US is fast-approaching! We celebrate this weekend. So, how are you going to celebrate? How about making mom a brunch and include some Spanish dishes featuring seasonal food like asparagus and fresh strawberries? Start with a traditional Spanish potato omelet and continue with asparagus wrapped in Serrano ham. For a main course, keep it simple with grilled lamb chops and potatoes. Finish with flare by serving a rich, creamy and super-simple strawberry flan.
...

Torrijas - Easy Mother's Day Breakfast for Kids

Spanish Torrijas, or bread pudding in English, originated in XV century Andalucia in convents. Nothing went to waste in those days, so it was a an easy way to use up stale bread. Today it is a popular breakfast food all over Spain, particularly in Madrid. Making torrijas is very easy: First, soak stale bread in beaten egg with milk, then fry until golden in vegetable oil. Serve with honey, sugar or cinnamon. There are many variations on the recipe - Some prefer white bread instead of the traditional baguette, while others soak bread in sweet wine, and still others soak the bread in honey! This time of year we like to serve the torrijas with fresh strawberries. Start with this basic recipe, and help your kids prepare an easy and very tasty breakfast for mom. She'll really appreciate the sweet start to the day.
...

Spanish Mother's Day Dinner Menu

Mother's Day in Spain is always the first Sunday of May, however here in the States we celebrate the second Sunday. No matter when or where you are celebrating in honor of your mom, why not prepare a few Spanish dishes? Start with some ice cold Spanish sparkling wine called cava and continue with the classic Spanish potato omelet and garlic shrimp, gambas al ajillo. Serve a fresh green salad as a first course, and move on to a Spanish lamb stew from Extremadura, with home-fried potatoes. End with a fresh Spanish fruit trifle, a delicious springtime dessert. Don't worry if you don't have time to prepare all of it, share the work with your siblings - just send them links to the recipes!
...

It's warmed up quite a bit in the last couple weeks and we're definitely ready for grilling season. We've dusted off the BBQ and begun to grill sausages, chorizos to be precise! We recommend that you try grilling up some chistorra sausages (pictured here), which are perfect for tucking into a baguette. There are several great internet sources where you can purchase authentic Spanish food, including chorizo sausages.
...

Fresh, locally grown asparagus is in the markets, as it is in Spain. It's a sign that Spring has truly arrived. This soup recipe is easy and quick, which makes it perfect for a weeknight dinner, or a Sunday brunch. This crema de esparrago soup is creamy, but only has a 1/2 cup of milk - and no cream or butter. That's a huge plus for those of us watching our weight. Serve it warm or cold. Either way it is delicious.
...
