Nothing strikes intimidation in the hearts of inexperienced cooks than that of the Thanksgiving Day turkey. Some of us ply forth dutifully and give it our best shot with mixed results. Then there are those of us who figure, "Why bother?" and let someone more adept at cooking do it for us. Like a restaurant chef. Which means going out for Thanksgiving Day dinner. Where to go? It's time for the Mother Goose Parade, Nov. 23

You know the economy is tough when longtime, beloved events find funding difficult. Even for the Mother Goose Parade. Yup, as late as September of this year, parade officials were threatening to cancel the family friendly event due to lack of sponsorship and funding. Thankfully, enough money has been raised for the parade to carry on. San Diego County's official opening of the Holiday Season always takes place the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day. The 2009 Mother Goose Parade is� Nov. 22 beginning at 10 a.m.

"Storybook Friends" is the theme, and unlike parades of the recent past, the budget-conscious 2009 edition of the Mother's Goose Parade won't feature any Hollywood stars. Instead, local heroes the Chula Vista Park View All-Stars, winners of the Little League World Series, will be serving as grand marshals of the Nov. 22 event.

San Diego Great Dane Named World's Tallest Dog

Nov. 12 was the official Guinness World Record Day and of the 30 records named, only one animal was honored and he hails from San Diego: Titan, a four-year-old Great Dane was certified as the world's tallest dog. Titan, who is owned by Diana Taylor, has an official height, as measured by a veterinarian, of just over 3� feet tall from floor to shoulder. Add another eight inches if you measure to the top of his head.

Any way you measure him, Titan is a massive dog. But he's also a gentle giant: according to owner Taylor, the 190-pound Titan is blind, deaf, epileptic and undergoes acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments every three weeks. As reported by the Associated Press, Taylor was living in Atlanta when she adopted Titan as a puppy from the Middle Tennessee Great Dane Rescue. When he could see out of one eye, she taught him sign language. As he went blind, they learned to communicate by touch.

San Diego Beer Week Promotes San Diego's Thriving Craft Beer Culture, Nov. 6-15

Seattle and Portland may have the known reputations as centers for craft beers and micro-breweries, but ever so steadily, San Diego is gaining a high reputation as a region for excellent beers.� So for the first time, the San Diego Brewers Guild is staging San Diego Beer Week, Nov. 6 to 15.

San Dieg Beer Week is a 10-day countywide festival that attracts beer tourism, fosters knowledge of our regional brewing heritage, and serves as a showcase for San Diego's breweries, restaurants, pubs, and other businesses with ties to the craft beer community.

There are currently more than 100 events planned for San Diego Beer Week. San Diego Beer Week kicks off with the VIP Session of the San Diego Brewers Guild Festival on Friday, November 6, followed by two general admission sessions on Saturday November 7, 2009, at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park. The Guild Festival is the largest gathering of local craft breweries featuring more than 80 beers brewed in San Diego County. Allied member restaurants will be at the event serving small bites to pair with the beers.

TNT (Thursday Night Thing) Returns to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Nov. 5

TNT (Thursday Night Thing) returns to MCASD Downtown. Taking inspiration from Tara Donovan's large-scale installations that are based on the physical properties of accumulated everyday materials, this TNT will celebrate the "Material Wonder" in the everyday. Donovan, a recipient of the 2008 MacArthur "genius" award, is known for using mass accumulations of ordinary objects, such as straight pins, paper plates, toothpicks, drinking straws, and pencils, to mimic the organization of geological or biological forms.

Autumn Activities in San Diego

Autumn is a great time in San Diego for locals to get out and do fun stuff. The summer heat and tourist crowds are all but gone, and the crisp, cooler weather brings a nice feeling, knowing the holidays are around the corner. We may not have a distinctive seasonal change as other parts of the country, but the weather makes for nifty outings and activities. To me, it's the best time to go out and enjoy San Diego.
