Audionow: 'Listen to Any Radio Station on Any Phone Free'

That's the claim from Audionow.com, currently in BETA. A visitor to radio.about.com tipped me off and wrote, "A few months ago a friend turned me on to Audionow that let's me listen to radio by calling a number at the station. I use it all the time instead of the apps on my Iphone from different stations. It is easier and more stable."

The Audionow.com website describes what it does this way: "The company's proprietary protected technology is the product of years of research and design. Our systems convert virtually any audio format available on the Internet and streams that connect to the AudioNow gateway server which then relays that stream to any phone listener."

You must register for the service and the company will ask for your name, phone number, email, and cell phone provider. You'll also have to agree to the terms of service. I read through the terms of service and they appear to be fairly straight-forward. Let me know if it works for you.

To register, go to this page at www.audionow.com.
Here is my annual Top 10 list of the most important Radio news stories from 2009. Stories are listed chronologically by date - not by relative importance to each other. Each story carries an important significance to the Radio business such as the passing of Radio icon, Paul Harvey, Radio & Records ceasing publication, or Citadel Broadcasting declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Of course, it's just my opinion. See all 10. (Logo: Corey Deitz)
Top 10 Radio News Stories of 2009 originally appeared on About.com Radio on Saturday, December 26th, 2009 at 00:44:22.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Little Sympathy for Bankrupt Radio Companies

Earlier this year, major radio players were forced to cut back employees to trim expenses during a downturn in advertising revenues. Now, the other shoe is dropping as several companies recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Yet, based on some recent comments, there is little sympathy from the radio listening community. Read more.
Little Sympathy for Bankrupt Radio Companies originally appeared on About.com Radio on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 at 12:25:30.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

It's official: one of the big players in radio has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Citadel is the third-largest U.S. radio company and owns legacy stations like WABC/New York and WLS/Chicago.

The filing happened today (12/20/09) in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Citadel disclosed it had $1.4 billion in assets and a total debt of $2.46 billion.
BBC Radio Breakfast Show Scrambles When Band Sings "F" Word Live

The band, Rage Against the Machine, "...incited mass panic at a British radio show this morning -- when the lead singer unleashed a string of f-bombs during a live on-air performance," according to tmz.com.

The presenters on Radio Five's "5 Live Breakfast" show thought they had an agreement with the group that it would censor the "F" word from their live performance of "Killing in the Name".

Not so much.

TMZ.com writes, "After a series of f-bombs, a female DJ can be heard scrambling to cut the audio..."

Jonathon Brandmeier Fires Back at Those Who Fired Him from WLUP-FM

We all deal with unemployment differently. Some of us sulk, some of us try to keep ourselves busy so we don't think about it. Jonathon Brandmeier, recently let go from WLUP-FM/Chicago, just posted a rap video which takes shots at the radio suits who fired him along with his current predicament.

It goes in part:

"Johnny B.'s the best and he's got awards to prove it,
But now the suits say it's cheaper to play music.
Hey, monkey: push a button and play another song,
Talent on the radio just doesn't belong.
Enjoy this crap while you can 'cause it won't last long."

See it: You can view "Johnny B "Unemployed Mo Fo" at this link at www.youtube.com.
