Holy Angels Catholic School in Chicago: One of the Largest African-American Catholic Schools in the U.S.

Holy Angels Catholic School, a pre-K though 8th grade Catholic school in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, is one of the largest African-American Catholic schools in the nation. Started in the 1880s by Irish immigrants, the church and school now serve the African-American families who began to settle in the neighborhood in the 1920s through 1950s. Formerly led by African-American priest George Clements, who originated the One Church-One Child program to help families in Catholic churches adopt African-American children, the school still caters to working families with extended hours and a rigorous academic program that prepares students to prepare Catholic high schools in the area.

Private schools offer fascinating upper-level history classes that often culminate in an AP exam (though some schools do not offer AP classes). These classes are often taught at a very sophisticated level and ask students to synthesize and analyze a great deal of historical information and to write about it in a concise and clear way. Performing well in high-level history classes means that students have to practice good study habits; they have to keep up with their reading, annotate and analyze their text, and read as much as they can outside of class. Famous Scholarship Students at Private Schools

Scholarship organizations such as A Better Chance, founded in 1963, and Prep for Prep in New York City, founded in 1978, have funded tens of thousands of students of color at private and public college-prep programs across the country. The alumni and alumnae of these programs have not only enriched their schools and been enriched by them, but they have also gone on to contribute to fields such as politics, education, law, medicine, and the arts, among others. Famous figures in today's world were graduates of these programs, including singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman, who attended the Wooster School in Connecticut with a scholarship from A Better Chance. Private school graduates such as President Barack Obama have also benefited from scholarships from their schools. Mr. Obama attended Punahou in Hawaii in part thanks to a scholarship from the school. Spotlight on the Brownell-Talbot School in Omaha, Nebraska

Brownell-Talbot, founded in 1863, is the oldest school in continuous operation in the state of Nebraska. Educating girls and boys from pre-school through 12th grade, the school offers a rigorous college-preparatory education with an average class size of 13, and its graduates go on to attend top colleges and universities across the country. The curriculum emphasizes writing and reading, and the school's speech teams have won many championships. In 2008, the Malone Family Foundation, created by TCI Cable founder John C. Malone, provided the school with a $2 million scholarship grant to help gifted students who require financial aid to attend the school. The school's famous alumni and alumnae include the daughters of showman Buffalo Billy Cody and Peter Fonda.

A recent study revealed that high school students at some competitive private schools get less than six hours of sleep a night, given their heavy work and extra-curricular load. As teenagers are supposed to sleep an average of 9 hours a night, a sleep expert found that the sleep-deprived students' cognitive abilities were worse than those of drunk people. Some are starting their classes later, while others are declaring a moratorium on homework during certain times.
