The Magic of Special Education Schools

In recent years, our knowledge of the developmental curve of students with learning disabilities and other special needs has grown. As a result, private special needs schools have sprung up across the country to help students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences. These schools help students by providing them with small class sizes, specially trained teachers, and a curriculum that caters to their cognitive and social needs. Read more about how special needs schools help children.

Started in the 1880s by Irish immigrants, the church and school now serve the African-American families who began to settle in the neighborhood in the 1920s through 1950s. Formerly led by African-American priest George Clements, who originated the One Church-One Child program to help families in Catholic churches adopt African-American children, the school still caters to working families with extended hours and a rigorous academic program that prepares students to prepare Catholic high schools in the area.

Cleveland, Ohio is home to a number of private schools, including Montessori schools, Catholic schools, schools for children with learning differences, and single-sex schools. Private schools in the city date back to the founding of Western Reserve College and Academy in 1826, which later became Case Western Reserve University and the separate Western Reserve Academy. Read more about private schools in Cleveland, Ohio.

How To Do Better in History Class

Private schools offer fascinating upper-level history classes that often culminate in an AP exam (though some schools do not offer AP classes). These classes are often taught at a very sophisticated level and ask students to synthesize and analyze a great deal of historical information and to write about it in a concise and clear way. Performing well in high-level history classes means that students have to practice good study habits; they have to keep up with their reading, annotate and analyze their text, and read as much as they can outside of class. As a reward, they will be able to learn a subject that touches on eery other academic discipline. Read about other ways to succeed in private school history classes.

Portland, Oregon has a number of college-preparatory private schools. Many schools, such as Catlin Gabel and The International School, the city's first International Baccalaureate elementary school, offer language instruction from the earliest grades. In addition, many schools, such as Portland Lutheran High School and St. Mary's Academy, offer generous amounts of financial aid. In fact, about 40 to 45% of the students at Portland Lutheran and St. Mary's receive need-based financial aid. Read more about private schools in Portland, Oregon.

Famous Scholarship Students at Private Schools

Scholarship organizations such as A Better Chance, founded in 1963, and Prep for Prep in New York City, founded in 1978, have funded tens of thousands of students of color at private and public college-prep programs across the country. The alumni and alumnae of these programs have not only enriched their schools and been enriched by them, but they have also gone on to contribute to fields such as politics, education, law, medicine, and the arts, among others. Famous figures in today's world were graduates of these programs, including singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman, who attended the Wooster School in Connecticut with a scholarship from A Better Chance. Private school graduates such as President Barack Obama have also benefited from scholarships from their schools. Mr. Obama attended Punahou in Hawaii in part thanks to a scholarship from the school. Read more about famous scholarship students at private schools.

Educating girls and boys from pre-school through 12th grade, the school offers a rigorous college-preparatory education with an average class size of 13, and its graduates go on to attend top colleges and universities across the country. The curriculum emphasizes writing and reading, and the school's speech teams have won many championships. In 2008, the Malone Family Foundation, created by TCI Cable founder John C. Malone, provided the school with a $2 million scholarship grant to help gifted students who require financial aid to attend the school. The school's famous alumni and alumnae include the daughters of showman Buffalo Billy Cody and Peter Fonda.

How Private Schools Are Using iPads

Private schools are on the forefront of using new technology such as iPads to enhance instruction across the curriculum. At many schools, such as the Drew School, a co-ed 9-12 school in San Francisco, all students receive iPads and are trained to use them. The school uses iPads so that students and math teachers can work together to solve a problem, and eventually, the school will replace textbooks with iPads. Other schools find that iPads can be wonderful tools for helping students organize their work. The key is training teachers, students, and even parents about how to best use the new technology. Read more about how schools are using iPads.

How Private Schools Can Reduce Stress

A recent study revealed that high school students at some competitive private schools get less than six hours of sleep a night, given their heavy work and extra-curricular load. As teenagers are supposed to sleep an average of 9 hours a night, a sleep expert found that the sleep-deprived students' cognitive abilities were worse than those of drunk people. Schools around the country are taking note of how stressed out their students are, thanks in part to the documentary Race to Nowhere. Some are starting their classes later, while others are declaring a moratorium on homework during certain times. Read more about how private schools and parents are trying to create happier, healthier kids.
