WipEout HD In-Game Ads Slowing Down Load Times, Yet Again

WipEout HD is the pretty futuristic racer that revived a franchise with it's blistering speed and, as the name implies, super sharp graphics.

So, when levels took longer to load due to a patch that added in-game advertising to the game, mind you WipEout HD was a full priced game, fans were outraged.

So Sony took down the ads, the load times went down as well, and everyone was happy, until now.

The ads are back, but this time with an assurance from SEO that they do not increase load time. Well the good folks over at JoyStiq took it upon themselves to put the new ad-spouting version of WipEout HD to the test, and it failed. Load times were approximately 5 seconds longer in the JoyStiq tests.

How about it Sony... any chance of taking down the ads, again?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition What's In The Box (PS3)

Yes, I splashed out for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition for the PS3. And yes, it was worth every single one of the 15,000 pennies it cost.

To celebrate my absurd(ly expensive) video game experience, I've decided to share with you the joy of opening the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition box. You know, so you can either decided to purchase one for yourself, skip it, or vicariously live the dream.

As I detail in the box opening, you get the game, a metal case for the game, a download code for Call of Duty Classic, an art book, a plastic bust, and, of course, the infamous night vision goggles.

Gimmick or greatness? Read on and decide for yourself.

"Military Madness: Nectaris"... Missing Story Truly Maddening

The trailer for "Military Madness: Nectaris" is fairly good, and the game itself could be described as the same, which is a shame, as the game could have been great.

Clearly, some bad PR brainstorming session decided that "Nectaris", a long standing Japanese turn-based strategy video game franchise, was too nondescript a name for the game and "Military Madness" was more appropriate.

Madness hardly describes the slow, methodical gameplay of "Military Madness: Nectaris." And sadly, the creativity would have been much better spent creating a story for the game.

Deep, fun, interesting, all describe the gameplay, but other than the fact that the enemies are a different color, I'm not sure why I'm fighting them. Don't get me wrong, I hate green as much as the next guy, but some story laid on top of what is otherwise a very cool turn-based strategy game would be nice.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh on a downloadable $9.99 game, however.

Have any of you played it yet? I'd love your thoughts.

"Final Fantasy VII" Top Selling PlayStation Network Game

Well, I tell ya, I'm never shocked by the sheer power of FFVII. From used "Final Fantasy VII" PSOnediscs selling for over 50 bucks in my local used vinyl (OK, mostly CDs) shop to a hit animated film and now finding itself the top PSN paid download... well Cloud and company seem nearly unstoppable.

I have to wonder if "Final Fantasy VII" is all that great a game, or if it's simply nostalgia. I can't tell, as one who is clearly under the FVII spell, I'm too close.

Regardless, if you want to experience of of the most popular, and probably greatest RPGs of all time, now is the time to download Final Fantasy VII from the PlayStation Store for your PSP and PS3.

Liberty City Time-Lapse

Normally the domain of blooming flowers or molding fruit, time-lapse video is nearly hypnotizing. When DigitalFoundry put together a time-lapse video that takes place over 15 days in Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City, "wow" seemed to be the most common response.

It's bizarre to see Liberty City this way, it really does reestablish it as the world's greatest virtual city. You'll wish the video was longer, as it is a wonderfully engaging sight to see GTAIV this way.

Both of the PS3 downloadable games are excellent this week, but they are not for everyone. Japanese turn-based strategy games and puzzlers play differently than their Western counterparts, but they are deep and fun if you are willing to take the plunge.

Brutal Legend DLC Map Pack Free on the PS3

Set to be released on November 5th, The Tears of the Hextadon map pack consists of two new maps for Brutal Legend, and is its first DLC. The Circle of Tears map features lots and lots of water. The Death's Fjord map features wide open icy spaces making the rush for fans more dangerous than ever.

The best part? From release until November 19th the The Tears of the Hextadon map pack is free on the PS3. The same map pack will go for 400 Microsoft Points on the Xbox 360.

While there's no explanation as to why the Brutal Legend DLC is free on the PS3 and not on the Xbox 360, you'll hear no complaints from the PlayStation Nation.
