SPB Software Updates SPB Time for Windows Mobile

If you're looking for a new way to use your PDA as an alarm clock, you might be interested in SPB Software's newly released update to SPB Time. The latest version offers a new user interface with improved alarm features. SPB Time 3.0 has three different types of alarms--Paranoid, Bio, and Classic. The Paranoid alarm is designed to wake deep sleepers while the Bio alarm uses a gentler approach. The Classic alarm strikes a happy medium between the two alternatives.

New App Lets Your House Contact You When There May Be Trouble

Protection One, a home and business security system provider, recently launched an application for the iPhone and the iPod touch that lets users access security panels and receive real-time updates on their mobile device. The application gives users the ability to make sure their security system is armed while on vacation or to turn off the alarm when cleaning crews or other contractors need to enter.

This new technology certainly offers some convenience and peace of mind. If a similar app were available for your PDA's operating system, would you use it?

Introducing an iPhone-style Alarm Clock for Windows Mobile

MobilityFlow announced Touch Alarm, an iPhone-style alarm clock for Windows Mobile PDAs and smartphones. The program is available in two editions: Touch Alarm Free and Touch Alarm Pro. Both editions offer iPhone-style scrolls of hours and minutes, a variety of skins, and an icon to unlock the alarm. The Pro version adds the ability to set multiple alarms, specify alarms for certain days of the week, play MP3 or WAV sounds, synchronize with Internet time, and more.

Touch Alarm is compatible with devices running Windows Mobile 5 or 6. A single-user license of Touch Alarm Pro costs $5. For more information about the new programs, visit http://touch-alarm.com.

Windows Marketplace Becomes Available for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1

Windows Mobile 6.5 users have been able to enjoy the Windows Marketplace for a few weeks. Now, as promised, Microsoft is making a Windows Marketplace download available for devices running Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1. The Marketplace provides access to hundreds of applications for your handheld, similar to Apple's popular App Store. Check it out by visiting mp.windowsphone.com on your PDA.

More Free Wi-Fi

The other day, I told you about Google's plans to offer free Wi-Fi in many airports throughout the country. Now, Microsoft and Yahoo are joining in the spirit of the upcoming season with their own free Wi-Fi offerings.

Microsoft has partnered with JiWire to give users free Wi-Fi in exchange for doing at least one Web search on Bing. Although exact service locations haven't been revealed, you'll likely find the free Wi-Fi from Bing and Microsoft at airports and hotels. Yahoo plans to offer free wireless Internet for all of New York City's Times Square for an entire year.

Thanks to offerings such as these, surfing the Internet from your PDA while on the road is getting easier and easier.

Free Airport Wi-Fi This Holiday Season

Last week, I told you that you'd be able to get free Wi-Fi midflight on select American Airlines and Virgin American flights this holiday season. Now, thanks to Google, even more travelers will have access to free Wi-Fi.

Today, the search giant announced that it is working with airports around the country as well as Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, Airport Marketing Income, and others to give you free Wi-Fi. The free service will be available now through January 15, 2010 at 47 airports. To see if your favorite airport is included, or to learn more about Google's plans, visit www.freeholidaywifi.com.

Google Puts NYC Subway System Maps in Your Pocket

A few weeks ago, Google introduced the Layers feature for the mobile version of Google Maps. Now, the search giant is adding a new layer to its Maps feature: the New York City Subway System. To see the new layer, view New York City in Google Maps, click the More option, and select Transit Lines. After zooming in, you should be able to see individual station icons. Tap any of the icons to get more information about the station.

You can get the latest version of Google Maps for mobile with Layers by visiting m.google.com/maps from your PDA.

Virgin Atlantic Offers an iPhone App for People Afraid of Flying

Recently, Virgin Atlantic began offering an iPhone application for people who are scared of flying. The application puts the company's Flying Without Fear course on a mobile platform to help put travelers' minds at ease. Within the course, you'll get answers to frequently asked questions, relaxation exercises and fear therapy, and more.

Although this application isn't available for PDAs at the moment, I think it's good that more and more creative applications for mobile platforms are becoming available. I welcome your thoughts: What do you think of this new application? Perhaps more importantly, would you use it?

American Airlines & Lexus Team Up to Offer Free Wi-Fi

Virgin America and Google aren't the only ones offering free Wi-Fi this holiday season. Recently, American Airlines and Lexus announced their own plans to offer free inflight Wi-Fi to customers on specially equipped planes from November 1 through November 7. The Gogo Inflight Internet service lets you check email, access social media sites, shop online, read news, and much more from laptops, smartphones, and PDAs.
