Monday, November 23, 2009 Oprah Show Today - Inside Sex Addiction Rehab

Through the years Oprah has gone behind the scenes of nearly every kind of addiction - food, drugs, alcohol, shopping, hoarding - but today, for the first time, Oprah welcomed Dr. Drew Pinsky to discuss sex addiction rehab on The Oprah Winfrey Show. As with any addiction, sex addiction involves losing control to the addiction itself - you no longer control it, it controls you. On the show, Oprah and Dr. Drew discussed both sex and love addiction and the common history many addicts have of having to deal with a tragedy in childhood which caused them to disconnect with intimacy.

Watching the guests speak about their struggles on today's episode gave a clear picture about this addiction that is very rarely ever talked about as it is highly robed in shame and guilt. Like when people addicted to food share how difficult it is to distance themselves from something need to survive, it was understandable to hear the guests explain that their recovery is hard when there is an expectation that they will once again have sex when in a new relationship. It was evident that many people in this country are suffering through their addiction in silence and that this show will be able to serve as one of the first steps in beginning the conversation.

Friday, November 20, 2009 Oprah Show Today - Friday Live with Gabby Sidibe & Ray Romano

On today's edition of Fridays Live in Chicago, there was a mix of tragic news, promising premieres and a bittersweet announcement. Oprah opened the show by speaking with the father and aunt of five year-old Shania Davis who was senselessly raped and murdered. It was unbelievable to see the strength the family displayed after such a tremendous loss. With the ability to touch on the deep seeded pain of another, actress Gabby Sidibe was able to display a profound first performance as the title character in the film Precious which opens nationwide today. Another great actor who graced the stage was Ray Romano, who after four years off of television is returning with the TBS drama Men of a Certain Age. Even though the interviews filled the show, it was the last couple of minutes that stole it -- Oprah announcing that the 2010-2011 season will be the last. Her controlled tears said everything - that it wasn't an easy decision, but it was the right one. I, for one, look forward to the next 22 months of shows to see what Oprah can do when she pulls out all the stops and ends with a bang.

The Oprah Winfrey Show Retires at 25

Rumors and speculations have been going around the web for months, but today Oprah made her official announcement - The Oprah Winfrey Show will say good-bye after 25 seasons, in September of 2011. It was a difficult but touching moment watching Oprah thank viewers for welcoming her into our homes for so many years and giving her the trust to teach us and introduce new ideas into our lives. The tears she shed so genuinely spoke to me that while it wasn't an easy decision to choose to walk away from such a success, it is the right time and the best option for her life. Not knowing yet as fans what place Oprah will have in our viewing lives after the end of the talk show, the next 22 months of television are sure to be some of the best Oprah episodes ever aired. Bigger, braver, and bolder to go out with a bang. In September of 2011, Oprah may not be in our homes every day, but the premiere of OWN is sure to be good medicine for the loss.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 Oprah Show Today - Tim Gunn Makeover My Man!

If a man in your life is still sporting the same hair style from junior high school, rocking out his concert tees, wearing his jeans a little too high, or driving you to dinner in his gym shoes, today's Oprah Winfrey Show with fashion expert Tim Gunn was right up your alley.

While the show was packed with fantastic man makeovers, the best part of the show had to be in the first moments. While Oprah hasn't disappointed in presenting great makeovers for quite some time, 19 years ago guest Russell walked out with his new look and it was hard to tell which image was the before and which was the after. Granted, 1990 isn't remembered for its classic styling, but Russell walked out with brightly layered shirts and socks, black sneakers, and to top it all off - a man purse. Thankfully, Oprah and Tim Gunn's team made it up to Russell and his wife with a surprise reveal to end the show. It was great to see a show encouraging men to look their best.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 Oprah Show Today - The All-Star Cast of 'Nine'

If the number of Academy Award winners or nominees on the cast list determines the quality of the film, Nine will definitely be one of the best movies this year. With A-listers that seem to never end, the latest musical directed by Rob Marshall Nine is summed up in two words by Kate Hudson - show stopping. On today's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah sat down with Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Kate Hudson to discuss their experience making the film Nine. Each of the actors spoke of the nerves coupled with excitement as they rehearsed for nearly three months before filming to nail the triple threat of singing, dancing and acting. From the looks of the clips that were displayed on the show, Nine is a nonstop feast for the eyes and ears.

I enjoyed seeing such amazingly talented actors exude such intimate consideration for one another on today's show. Stars are often seen as narcissistic or artificial, and on today's show that was the furthest from the truth. Even though the talent on Oprah's stage was magnificent, the way the actors shared their fear of performance in the beginning of rehearsal carried its way into their chemistry on the show today. With the love and dedication that went into making the film, Nine is sure to be a hit. Catch the film when it opens nationwide on Christmas Day.

Oprah said it multiple times on today's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show -- if you are not a consumer of porn and erotica, a number of your friends and neighbors are. 1 out of 3 online buyers of porn is a woman and in a multibillion dollar industry, that is a lot of women viewing. Not only did Lisa Ling explore the sex industry, Oprah also spoke with Jenna Jameson, the most famous porn star, and questioned why so many women are buying the products and what they are looking to get from them.

There were so many things I found interesting and eye-opening during this episode - first, I was impressed by Jenna Jameson and the way she carried herself through a very disrespected field and still came out on the other side proud of herself. Secondly, I was curious watching why Oprah didn't speak to women or couples to help explain why so many are turning to the industry to add spice back into their love lives. I found the episode presented with taste and moderation with not going too far into detail, but also that the show served as a starting point to open viewers minds to a more female targeted product line that can help get them in touch with their more sensual side.

Monday, November 16, 2009 Oprah Show Recap - The Sarah Palin Interview

Viewers have been waiting for the day and it finally arrived on today's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show - the Sarah Palin interview filled the entire hour with questions regarding the campaign, the Palin family, and what lies ahead in the future.

I have to admit I was a little weary before the show wondering how the chemistry would be between Sarah Palin and Oprah, as they had never met before the taping. From the start of the interview through to the ending credits, it was one of the more entertaining interviews I have watched on Oprah in the last few seasons. In only two instances did I notice Sarah Palin non-answering a question - first regarding the recent antics of Levi Johnston, and second when the subject of the 2012 presidential election was raised. Other than avoiding those two topics, I found Sarah Palin to be confident, charming, and relatable. I immediately noticed that the person sitting down with Oprah was ready to speak her truth and relieved to be able to do just that - free of coaching and scripting. It will be interesting to see where the journey leads, as I'm sure this is definitely not the last we will see of Sarah Palin.

Friday, November 13, 2009 Oprah Show Today - Stephanie Meyer, Robin Givens & Karaoke Challenge Winner

It was a packed edition of Friday Live on today's Oprah Winfrey Show, where she not only announced the first winner of the Karaoke Challenge, but she also cleared the air with Robin Givens and welcomed mega-bestselling author of the Twilight Saga, Stephanie Meyer.

Viewers had to wait until the end of the show to see who was going to take the most of their more than 2.5 million votes. I was not at all surprised to hear that Abraham won and look forward to hearing the song he will be given the opportunity to record with L.A. Reid's label. Seeing all of the winners go home with a large check was also rewarding, given that all of them competed without any knowledge of a prize at the end, and each of their lives will be changed for the better with the money.

It was clear watching Oprah's segment with Robin Givens, that she recognized a moment during her interview with Mike Tyson where she could have spoken up about domestic violence, but instead focused on Mike's experience. While I never questioned Oprah's stand on abuse, it was beneficial to hear her clarify that it is never OK.

For all the Twilight fans in the audience and the millions around the world, Stephanie Meyer gave a very unique perspective into her start as a writer and inspiration for the series. While I have never read the books or seen the movies, I was very intrigued by her start as a stay-at-home mother looking to rediscover herself.
