Prytania Theatre Serves Up More Classics

Excellent, guys. Prytania Theatre's been making enough money from its classic movie series to add more to the roster:

A Clockwork Orange (1971), starring Malcolm McDowell and directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess' novel. (This is a very hard R, parents.) August 14.

An American in Paris (1952), Oscar winner for Best Picture, directed by Vincente Minnelli, starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. August 16-19.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), classic MGM musical directed by Stanley Donen. August 23-26.

The King and I (1956), directed by Walter Lang and starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. August 30- September 2.

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962 - and my favorite of the bunch), starring Gregory Peck with a screenplay for Horton Foote's adaptation of Harper Lee's classic novel. September 6-9.

Singin' in the Rain (1952), the best of the MGM musicals, starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debby Reynolds. September 13-16.

Hello, Dolly (1969), starring Walter Matthau and Barbra Streisand and directed by Gene Kelly. September 20-23.
Prytania Theatre Serves Up More Classics originally appeared on About.com New Orleans on Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 at 10:02:53.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

August 7 is "Free Fruit Friday" at French Market Produce

The French Market will celebrate National Farmers' Market Week (August 2-8, 2009) by offering free Louisiana-grown peaches (one per person) and free lemonade (one cup per person) on Friday, August 7th from 12 - 2 p.m. at French Market Produce, just inside the French Market arch at Ursuline and N. Peters Streets.

<IMG SRC="http://z.about.com/d/neworleans/1/0/k/0/-/-/frenchmarketsign_100x100.jpg" width="100 height="100" border="0">
Image Courtesy of French Market Corporation

During the same two hours, Washboard Chaz & St. Louis Slim will offer live music. There will also be a stiltwalker dressed as Carmen Miranda, and an artist juggling fruits and vegetables. I'm pretty sure one of those balloon animal guys will show up too.

August 7 is "Free Fruit Friday" at French Market Produce originally appeared on About.com New Orleans on Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 at 20:11:18.

Permalink | Comment | <a href="http://neworleans.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://neworleans.about.com/b/2009/08/04/august-7-is-free-fruit-friday-at-french-market-produce.htm&zItl=August 7 is "Free Fruit Friday" at French Market Produce">Email this

In Defense of Print Artists in New Orleans

In what is supposedly a move to "protect" artists in the French Quarter, New Orleans has decided to enforce an old law banning artists from selling prints in the Jackson Square area.

The main debate regarding this action has centered around economics and the tourism industry. Evidently, the city counsel feels that tourists are only interested in getting their art cheap and cannot understand the difference between original and replicated works.

But a more central issue to me is the idea that art not made "by hand" is somehow not really art. The current ban affects the sale of lithographs, serigraphs, computer-generated art, collages, and many other forms of artistic expression.

While I'm working on a proper article on this subject, I'm asking any New Orleans artists to weigh in on the matter here. Should there be a ban? If so, how should it be defined?
In Defense of Print Artists in New Orleans originally appeared on About.com New Orleans on Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 at 11:32:35.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

The Saints Need to March In, Already

Seriously, this really could be a great year for the Saints. They've kept their great offense from last year -- minus Duce, of course, but we all saw that coming -- and they've beefed up that defense. Let's get the season started!

Nola.com has a new Saints page up that's worth checking out. The Saints Official Site has the schedule, etc. The first pre-season game is against the Cincinnati Bengals, August 14, 7 p.m. CST.
The Saints Need to March In, Already originally appeared on About.com New Orleans on Friday, July 31st, 2009 at 09:09:16.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Two Signs of Recovering Economy in New Orleans

Two tentative signs of economic recovery in NOLA have shown up in government reports. The rate of lost jobs for metro New Orleans slowed down last month to 1,200. Furthermore, that's mostly due to teachers and the end of the school year.

The second sign is in real estate. Resales of residential houses rose 3.6% last month, which makes it three months in a row now that the numbers have risen.

Have You Checked Out the Prytania's Classic Movies?

North By Northwest, the one with Cary Grant in the corn field with the plane coming at him, is playing this weekend at the Prytania Theatre - 12 noon Sunday - Wednesday.

Historical? Let's Draw a Line, Guys

That ugly canopy at the south entrance to the Causeway is going to be torn down as part of the new flood protection construction, and some people are protesting it as the loss of an "historical landmark."

Seriously, people, it's a concrete eyesore, a '50s-era shade maker for the booth workers, not the Cabildo.

A huge part of New Orleans' culture -- and charm -- comes from our love of old things, of feeling connected to the city around us. But let's not get carried away.
Historical?
