Harvick Avoids Final Wreck For 2010 Budweiser Shootout Win

There wasn't a lot of passing tonight in�the 2010 Budweiser Shootout in Daytona but the final laps still provided plenty of action. � Kevin Harvick dove under Greg Biffle to jump from fourth place to the lead on a green-white-checkers restart. �Just as Harvick got half a carlength ahead Biffle was wrecked from behind and the race was officially over.

This is Harvick's second Budweiser Shootout victory in a row. �Last year he followed this win with a second place finish in next Sunday's Daytona 500. �Can he improve one position from that performance and sweep the Daytona Speedweeks' checkered flags?

Martin Claims 2010 Daytona 500 Pole

Qualifying for the 2010 Daytona 500 wrapped up on Saturday afternoon. Based on Daytona's unique qualifying format only the front row is locked in on qualifying speed. �Hendrick Motorsports dominated qualifying as Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. set the two fastest times and locked up the front row starting spots.

The rest of the field will be determined by Thursday's Gatorade Duel at Daytona.

Saturday Night Features the Budweiser Shootout

After the long off-season NASCAR's stars are back in action this weekend at Daytona International Speedway. � The 2010 Budweiser Shootout will take center stage on Saturday night at 8pm on FOX.

This year the Budweiser Shootout features new qualification criteria which puts the Chasers from last year plus any past winner at Daytona into the field. � It should be quite a show as 28 drivers are eligible to compete on Saturday night under the lights in Daytona.

NASCAR Cuts Truck Guaranteed Starters

NASCAR recently made a change to the number of guaranteed starters in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series effective with the start of the 2010 season in Daytona. � Previously 30 of the 36 starters were guaranteed. In 2010 NASCAR is trimming that to 25 guaranteed starters.

I like this change and hope that NASCAR trims the number of guaranteed starters in the other series as well.

Actually, I think NASCAR should do away with the guaranteed starters completely and simply start the fastest 43 cars every week. �If Dale Earnhardt Jr., or any of the sport's other big names, don't make the show one week then they will have to try harder next week. �This is a sport. There should be no "gimmies."

Felix Sabates Ready To Abandon Michigan

NASCAR car owner Felix Sabates has some ideas about how to drive up demand for NASCAR. �According to this article over at ThatsRacin.com Felix suggests that NASCAR generate demand by limiting the supply. Among other changes he suggests trimming the NASCAR schedule from 36 races back to 30.

Michigan International Speedway is on Sabates' suggested chopping block. �He says �"I mean, there's nobody left in Detroit other than the police and the unemployed. I'd cut Michigan off the schedule altogether. Michigan - I'm talking about the state - is never coming back to what it used to be, so why go there and throw good money after bad money?"

Can Hamlin Win The Cup With A Torn ACL?

Denny Hamlin established himself as a top NASCAR Sprint Cup contender in 2009. �Denny Hamlin picked up four wins on his way to a fifth place finish in the 2009 points and ended the year with the second best driver rating overall.

However,�Denny Hamlin tore the ACL in his left knee on Friday. �The injury apparently came while he was playing basketball. �Since the Daytona 500 is so close there is no time for surgery so Hamlin is going to run the entire 2010 season and then get his knee repaired.

I've never torn my ACL but wouldn't this injury affect his ability to use the clutch? �This will be a problem every time he leaves the pits not to mention the road races at Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen.�What do you think, can Denny Hamlin be as effective with this injury in 2010 as he was was in 2009?

NASCAR To Relax Rules In 2010

After last fall's terrible Talladega race NASCAR has taken steps to, hopefully, improve the racing this year. Starting with the 2010 Daytona 500 NASCAR has decided to relax the rules that limit bump-drafting, increase the size of the restrictor plate to give the cars more horsepower and to allow the drivers to beat and bang a little more on the track.

It is clear that NASCAR is listening to its drivers and fans and making an attempt to bring the racing back. �This is at least a step in the right direction. �We will have to see how this plays out on the track in just a few weeks.

2010 Truck Series Schedule Sees Changes

The 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule continues to change as this week NASCAR announced that Darlington Raceway was added to the 2010 schedule to replace the financially-troubled Milwaukee Mile. � Darlington joins Pocono as new tracks on the 2010 Truck Series schedule.

On the other side of the coin Auto Club Speedway in California and Memphis join Milwaukee as tracks that were dropped from the Camping World Truck Series for this season.

While the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series schedules remained pretty stable for 2010 the Truck Series has definitely shaken things up for this year.
