In 2009, I wrote about the possibility of a casino on Long Island, but so far, it hasn't happened. But will things change now? Lawmakers in New York State are currently discussing --behind closed doors-- a Long Island casino that would have 2000 video lottery machines at various OTB sites in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, according to News 12.

If you plan on taking the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) this weekend, May 18-19, 2013, please note that buses will replace train service on the Port Jefferson branch between Huntington and Port Jefferson, starting at 12:35 a.m. on Saturday and continuing through Sunday. Workers will be replacing concrete ties and renewing the crossing at Lawrence Road in Kings Park.

What's Your Opinion of the New "Great Gatsby" Movie?

Ever since Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" film opened on May 10, 2013, everyone who's seen it has a different opinion. Some think that it epitomizes the glamour and decadence of the Long Island Gold Coast during the Roaring Twenties. Others wonder why Jay-Z tunes are in the film. Did Luhrmann think "rappers" instead of "flappers?" The opulent costumes and sets have been hailed by some, while others question the use of 3-D in the movie. (fyi, you can choose to see the movie in 3-D or in regular 2-D. Make sure you check the times for each at your local movie theater.)

LIRR Will Operate Non-Stop Service To & From Penn and the Hamptons

Starting on Friday, May 24, 2013, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) will launch a new service, the Cannonball, offering non-stop service every Friday from Penn Station at 4:07 p.m., arriving 94 minutes later in Westhampton at 5:41 p.m., with further stops in Southampton at 6:03 p.m., Bridgehampton at 6:30 p.m., East Hampton at 6:25 p.m. and Montauk at 6:48 p.m. The cost is $27 from Penn to Montauk. Reserved seating is also available for $47 when purchased in advance. This guarantees reserved seating and the service of onboard attendants who serve snacks and beverages to passengers at their seats.
