As bilingual lawyers become more important to the profession, law schools are responding.

The latest school to offer a class in Spanish is Marquette Law with "Comparative Criminal Law and Procedure -- in Spanish." Read all about it and Spanish-language classes offered at other law schools at the Marquette University Law School Faculty Blog.

Shopping for Your Supreme Court Fanatic

Do you have someone on your holiday list who just can't get enough of a particular Supreme Court Justice?

What? It could happen.

The National Law Journal reports on some brand new Supreme Court Justice baseball cards -- the only logical follow-up, really, to the Supreme Court Justice bobbleheads already available.

According to Law.com:

Roberts is shown in the image of Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown, the famed Chicago Cubs pitcher who, like Roberts, grew up in Indiana. In the background is legendary umpire Bill Klem -- a nod to Roberts' 2005 statement that the Court must strive to be a "fair and unbiased umpire."

The remainder of the cards should be available shortly.

Harvard Law Establishes Fellowship for Jobless Grads

Harvard Law has started the Holmes Public Service Fellowship program, named for Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., to provide as many as 12 HLS grads with stipends of up to $35,000 to work in public interest law for one year. The school is ready to pony up nearly a half million dollars to fund the fellowships.

Applicants will have to prove they have indeed been jobhunting to be eligible; those with law firm offers but deferred start dates will not be considered for the fellowships, which will be awarded in April and May.

"These fellowships will make it possible for more students to offer direct legal assistance to people in communities around the world and at the same time addresses the fact that funding for public service and public interest work jobs is especially in short supply right now," wrote Harvard Law Dean Martha Minow. "I am proud that with this program, we can support our soon-to-be-graduates in their efforts to help others."

Winter Session at Rutgers Law-Newark

If you haven't had enough of law school and want to use your winter break to earn some credits, check out the Winter Session at Rutgers School of Law-Newark.

Rutgers Law in Newark is offering Intensive Trial Advocacy and New Jersey Practice to law school graduates and to students who have completed the first-year program or its equivalent at an ABA-accredited law school.

Intensive Trial Advocacy will use lectures and workshops to teach successful litigation skills, while New Jersey Practice will focus on the rules of civil procedure, which is now tested on the essay portion of the New Jersey State Bar exam. Each of these affordably-priced, two-credit classes will be taught by recognized experts in the topic. The classes will run from Monday, January 4th, through Friday, January 8th.

Concord Law Professor's Book on Legal Employment

Richard L. Hermann, Concord Law professor, provides advice and tips on legal career management and job-hunting in his new book, The Lawyer's Guide to Finding Success in Any Job Market.

"Developments in science and technology, major demographic upheavals, and policy crises are just some of the trends that will keep lawyers employed. Legal jobs can be psychologically satisfying, financially rewarding, and, most importantly, recession-proof," says Hermann.

Super Lawyers Come from Outside the Ivy League Too

According to Super Lawyers magazine, which publishes rankings of the Top 10 law schools for producing Super Lawyers in thirty states, many so-called Super Lawyers come from outside Ivy League law schools.

In fact, in eight of the major markets (North California, San Diego, Southern California, New York, and Philadelphia, Florida, Massachusetts, and Texas), Yale Law School, consistently the best law school in the country according to U.S. News & World Report, only appears in the top 10 for New York--at number six. Indeed, no Ivy League law school came in at number one in any of the markets.

Take heed, law school applicants and students; you don't need to go to an Ivy League law school to be a successful, well-respected attorney; the most important thing to do is make the most of your opportunity at whatever school you find yourself.

ABA Asks Obama for Law Student Loan Relief

The American Bar Association is asking the government to help out recent law school grads who are having difficulty securing employment; the main request is to allow grads to convert private loans into federal ones, which would allow payment to be deferred up to three years.

"This is really intended to give them some breathing room," said ABA President Carolyn Lamm.
