What You Shouldn't be Asked in a Job Interview

When I was interviewing for one of my first jobs, the company wanted know if I was married, and wanted to meet with my husband to be sure he didn't mind the travel involved. After I got the job, we had hiring criteria for the people who worked for me as part-time merchandisers, including being a married woman whose kids were in school, with time available mid-day to work, and who only needed supplemental income.

Back then, you didn't hear that much about discrimination, but, that was only one blatant example. Federal and state laws prohibit prospective employers from asking certain questions that are not related to the job they are hiring for. That doesn't mean you won't get asked, even today. There are still companies that aren't aware of the rules or will try and discover what they want to know, regardless of the law.

Here's more information on discriminatory interview questions, what hiring managers can ask, and what they shouldn't be asking candidates for employment, plus options for handling discriminatory interview questions.

Company Reviews

When the job market is tight, it's more important than ever to get the inside scoop on companies you're interested in working at. First of all, the more information you have, the more effectively you'll interview. Secondly, company information will help you decide if you want to work for a company - or not.

Glassdoor, the company and salary research site, has excellent information for job seekers including company reviews, ratings, salaries, CEO approval rating, competitors, and much more company information. Job seekers can find and anonymously share company reviews, ratings and salary details.

Telonu.com is full of company reviews, rants, and raves. You can search by company and location. You can also see what site visitors have to say about people i.e. your prospective boss.

Speaking of people, do keep in mind that reviews on all these sites are posted by individuals, including possibly disgruntled employees. So, use them as a tool to help gather more information about a company, but don't count on them as 100% accurate, because every employee's experience is different.

Vault is another source of company reviews. Site visitors can read company reviews, and get the buzz, uppers, and downers, for over 10,000 companies. Company overviews are free, which is all you need most of the time. You'll need to pay a fee if you want more details.

There are also sites which don't contain actual company reviews, but do provide basic company information that's useful for job seekers. Browse the company list on WetFeet.com or search by company name to get an overview and company highlights. For another quick overview, Hoovers.com has a large company directory. Again, you'll need a subscription for detailed information, but the basics are free.

Another way to get inside information is to check who you're connected to at the company on LinkedIn. Ask your connections what they can tell you about the company and what it's like to work for. Searching by company name on Google is another way to find information about companies. Search YouTube as well. You may find company produced videos with information on employment opportunities and company culture.

Here's more on company reviews and getting insider interview advice from Glassdoor.

Unemployment Down and Running Out

The unemployment rate dropped slightly, from 10% to 9.7%, in January, with non-farm payroll employment losing 20,000 jobs. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) continued to increase in January, reaching 6.3 million. In addition, the job market remains really competitive with over 6 unemployed workers for every job opening.

Job losses continued in construction and in transportation and warehousing, while employment increased in temporary help services, health care, retail, and in federal government hiring.

The underemployment rate, which includes people who aren't looking for work, but want a job, and those who are working part-time because they can't find a full-time position dropped to 16.5% in January.

Here's a really good explanation of the employment picture and what light there is at the end of the job loss tunnel from About.com's Guide to the U.S. Economy, Kimberly Amadeo.

Unemployment Extensions Running Out

On a related note, the current unemployment extension is set to expire on February 28. According to the National Employment Law Project over 5 million unemployed workers will run out of benefits by June, including 1.2 million in March if an extension isn't passed.

A new extension of unemployment needs to be passed soon in order for benefits to continue without interruption. Here's more on the National Employment Law Project's campaign to extend unemployment benefits.

CareerBuilder Super Bowl Commercials

For the sixth year in row, CareerBuilder is heading to the Super Bowl. This year, the commercials (three are in the running for the Super Bowl spot) feature ads from everyday consumers who entered and won the HireMyTVAd contest.

There were three winners selected, all of whom get a prize, but only one (not the ad that was too hot for TV) will be featured on game day. Take a look at CareerBuilder's commercials - Job Fairy, (very) Casual Friday, and Worst Seat - and vote for your favorite.

The focus of the ads is fitting in at work. In conjunction with the ad campaign, CareerBuilder surveyed to see how employees got along with their colleagues. Almost 40%, and more women than men, didn't feel like they fit in and were considering whether they should start to job search. Given some of the crazy behavior reported, starting a job search might be a good idea for some of the workers:

Co-worker ate the cheese off the pizza box at a company meeting.

Co-worker talks openly about flatulence.

Co-worker in the cubicle next to me wears 3-D glasses with the lenses removed.

Co-worker repeatedly bangs a mallet on the table for no apparent reason.

Co-worker whistles 8 hours a day.

Co-worker chews tobacco and spits it into empty soda bottles

Former boss brought a baby sippy cup to a meeting and started drinking out of it.

Co-worker cleaned fingernails using a counterpart's business card while sitting in their office

More Jobs in January

Job search engine LinkUp, which indexes jobs from over 20,000 company sites, reports that new job listings on company websites rose by 69,082 in January. This is an increase of 18% from December.

Even though December is traditionally a bad month for new job listings, the report shows progress in the right direction. This is good news for job seekers and a sharp contrast to LinkUp's dismal December report in which new and total job listings job search by 24% and 17% respectively.

By the way, LinkUp is a terrific site for finding jobs direct from company websites. Job seekers can search by keywords, job title, company, and/or location, to find jobs posted on company's own websites. Here's more on using LinkUp to job search.

Interview Dining Etiquette

Interviewing can be really stressful when you have to interview over lunch or dinner. As well as having to answer interview questions, you have to remember your manners. Do you know the best menu items to order? How about what to do with your napkin if you get up from the table? What about the bill and the tip?

If you don't remember to say thank you, eat with your mouth open, order the moxt expensive item on the menu, or make another dining faux pas, it will count against you. On the other hand, good manners may give you the edge over another candidate, so, take some time to brush up your dining etiquette skills.

It's also important to take the time to send a thank you note after the interview. That will help you make a good impression, too.

Job Search Tax Deductions

Now that you should have received all your W-2, 1099, and other tax forms in the mail, it's time to start thinking about preparing your tax return. If you spent time job searching last year, you may be able to deduct some of your job search expenses.

If you were unemployed last year, the first $2,400 of your unemployment is exempt from federal taxes. However it does need to be reported on your tax return, and the balance is taxable. Unemployment may also be subject to state income tax.

If you looked for a job in the same line of work you're currently in, many of your expenses like phone calls, the costs of preparing and copying your resume, and career counseling are deductible. These job search tax deduction tips will help you make sure that you get all the tax benefits you're entitled to.

For tax help and advice, be sure to visit About.com's Tax Planning site. Well-written letters and resumes can make a big difference in the outcome of your job search.

Rather than starting from scratch and trying to figure out what to write, it's helpful to review examples to get ideas for your own letters. Find a resume or letter that fits your circumstances, then edit it so it's personalized.

There's also a collection of student resumes and letters, just for high school students, college students, and recent graduates. And when you're applying via email, here are job search email samples to review.

Bad Job Sites

My email In Box is full, every single day, of pitches for the latest, greatest, best sites for job seekers. These job sites promise to find you a job fast, they guarantee you exclusive job listings, and they assure you that the site is a top ranked site for job seekers.

Some of the job sites that call themselves the best job sites are not good job sites, let alone the best job sites. Others are bad job sites, and still others would garner a spot on a list of worst job sites.

The worst of them take advantage of job seekers who can't afford to waste money by charging them for job listings and resources that are available free via the job search engines or directly on company sites.

Because the Internet is so difficult to police, it's up to job seekers to do due diligence and check out the job sites they are going to use ahead of time.

Before you sign up for a fee-based site, post your resume, or register to use a job site, check out the difference between bad job sites and good ones, and how you can evaluate job sites, so you don't get taken advantage of and spend money on something that's available elsewhere absolutely free. It won't take you much time to check out the site and it's well worth what you'll save in the long run.

Related: Job Scams | List of Job Scams | Scam Warning Signs

Copyright Spectral-Design

Bad Job Sites originally appeared on About.com Job Searching on Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 06:00:11.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Unemployment Extension News

February 1 Update: The current unemployment extensions are set to expire on February 28. The Senate and House Jobs Bills may include an extension, but they have not been finalized. It's important to let your Senator know that continued extensions are critical. Here's how to contact the Senate (from the National Employment Law Project):
http://www.unemployedworkers.org/page/speakout/FederalUI2010

If you're out of work, please add your story to our collection:

Share Your Unemployment Story

January 20 Update: The National Employment Law Project is urging Congress to continue the extended unemployment benefits program, including full federal funding of Extended Benefits, the $25 per week in Federal Additional Compensation, and the 65% 15-month COBRA subsidy through the end of 2010. Action is needed now because the current unemployment extensions are set to expire at the end of February. Here's how to send a message to Congress ask them to extend benefits for workers who are going to run out: http://www.nelp.org/page/speakout/FederalUI2010

Unemployment Extension

February 1 Update: The current unemployment extensions are set to expire on February 28. The Senate and House Jobs Bills may include an extension, but they have not been finalized. It's important to let your Senator know that continued extensions are critical. Here's how to contact the Senate (from the National Employment Law Project):
http://www.unemployedworkers.org/page/speakout/FederalUI2010

If you're out of work, please add your story to our collection:

Share Your Unemployment Story

Read Unemployed Worker Stories

January 20 Update: The National Employment Law Project is urging Congress to continue the extended unemployment benefits program, including full federal funding of Extended Benefits, the $25 per week in Federal Additional Compensation, and the 65% 15-month COBRA subsidy through the end of 2010.

December 22 Update: President Obama has signed legislation extending unemployment benefits, including extended unemployment benefits and the COBRA subsidy, that were set to expire at the end of the year through February.

Eligiblity depends your tier of benefits plus state guidelines, so when the legislation is passed, check with your State Unemployment Office website for details on who qualifies and when and how benefits will be paid.

December 19 Update: The Senate has passed a two-month extension of unemployment benefits through February 28, 2010. The legislation, already approved by the House. continues the Extended Benefits Program, the Federal Additional Compensation (extra $25 per week) and the COBRA subsidy. President Obama is expected to sign the legislation.

December 18 Update: The House has passed a two-month extension of unemployment benefits through February 28, 2010. The legislation continues the Extended Benefits Program, the Federal Additional Compensation (extra $25 per week) and the COBRA subsidy.

November 18 Update: There a lot of confusion surrounding the latest unemployment extension, which provides for additional weeks of benefits for workers who run out of unemployment by the end of the year. Part of the reason is that the new legislation changed the exisiting tiers of benefits. The other is that the only eligible workers are those that run out of benefits by the end of the year. Here's clarification on the new unemployment extension.

Do you have a bad job, first job, or how you found a job story to share? We have received lots of interesting worst job stories - ranging from second wives to mind readers and plain old bad jobs that are high stress and low pay.

First job stories run the gamut, too - from paper boys to princesses and just about everything in between. They are fun to read, and we'd be thrilled to add your stories to the lists.

The unemployment stories are truly heartbreaking, but I think it's critically important for everyone to understand how difficult it is to be out of work, out of money, and running out of options.

Photos are a welcome addition to your story. Just a word of warning though - if you're still working at your bad job, don't include your last name or a photo. You don't want to lose your job because of what you posted online, regardless of how bad it is.

Hire My Friend Facebook Application

Everyone, at least almost everyone, is on Facebook and a lot of us spend a good amount of time there. What better way than to put Facebook to good use than to help your friends find a job? There's a new Facebook application - Hire My Friend - that lets you leverage the power of your network to help your job searching friends.

It's actually old fashioned networking (telling people you know about someone who needs a job) using the advantage of social media. Maybe, even probably, one of your friends knows someone who is hiring or has seen a job lead that might be a good fit or can recommend a company or refer your friend to one of their friends or to a LinkedIn connection.

After you add the Hire My Friend application, you answer a few questions about who your friend is, what they do, and what type of job they are looking for. You can include a link to their LinkedIn profile. Then your friend will be added to your profile. Your friends will be able to send a message to the job seekers or add them as a friend.

Do me a favor though, and before you use this, ask your friends if they want your help. Not everyone wants to publicize their job search on Facebook. Even though you mean well, you're not doing anyone a favor if you make their job search more public than they want it to be.

On a related note, there are lots of job search related iPhone apps, too. You can download job search iPhone apps that search for jobs by keyword and location (using the iPhone GPS function), email job listings, keep track of your contacts, and even create a resume.

Many iPhone applications are free. Before you buy an app, check for reviews in the iTunes store to make sure it's worth investing a few dollars.

When you are using email to job search it's important to send your messages the right way - or they won't get opened, let alone read. I've received emails with no subject lines (the chances of me opening them are slim), emails applying for jobs that I'm not hiring for and never heard of, and emails written in abbreviations, acronyms, and slang better suited to texting. To be honest, if I have to figure out what it says, it's going to get trashed.

Annoying for me, but worse for the sender, are when my replies bounce because they got their own email address wrong (it happens) or their account is full.

Some of the most important email messages you send are when you apply for jobs. When you're sending email cover letters it's really important to follow the employer's instructions on how to submit your cover letter and resume, and to make sure that your email cover letters are written as well as any other correspondence you send.

As I mentioned, it's important to include Subject Line. Your Signature is important, as well, so it's easy for employers to get in touch with you. Don't forget the basics, as well. Hotbabe@anywhere.com or anything similar is not a good email address, obviously, to use when you're job hunting. Instead, get a dedicated (and free) email account to use just for your job search.

Here's information on what to include in your job search emails, how to format your email, and how to make sure your email message is read.
