Apply for a Jewelry Business Grant

The call has gone out again this year for the annual Halstead Bead, Inc. Business Development Grant competition. This is the fifth year this company has offered this grant which is designed to help American jewelry designers who are trying to enter into the bridge jewelry market. Bridge jewelry refers to jewelry that is in between costume jewelry and fine jewelry, which probably describes the jewelry many readers of this site make.

The grant winner will receive a $5000 cash business grant, $1,000 Halstead Bead, Inc. gift certificate, a feature in the company's catalog and on the web site, an engraved plaque, and lots of promotional opportunities. Obviously, this is a big deal! The deadline isn't until this summer, but considering the amount of work it requires to fill out any grant application, it is never too early to start. Here are a few tips to think about if you are considering applying:

Make sure you thoroughly read all the requirements before apply to make sure you know what you are getting into and that you even qualify to enter in the first place.

If you do qualify and decide to fill out the application and collect the other required materials, such as photograph, double check that you have provided all the necessary information. The easiest way to get booted out of the running to not follow the instructions.

Turn in the best quality work you can, meaning excellent photographs and well-written text that has been edited and proof-read thoroughly.

Read the company's Hints and Tips section. This information comes directly from the company, so that means you can find out details about what it might be looking for in a grant candidate.

Finally, check out previous grant winners. It is always helpful to see who has won previously.

Apply for a Jewelry Business Grant originally appeared on About.com Jewelry Making on Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at 18:33:56.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Jewelry Books, Yes!

I have had the chance to review a number of jewelry books lately, so in case you missed any of the more recent reviews, here is a little update for you:

Bead in Time
A Bead in Time by Lisa Crone includes 35 beading projects plus tips for designing jewelry using inspiration found all around us.

Seed Bead Fusion
Rachel Nelson-Smith brings together wire techniques and seed bead stitches to create some truly unique jewelry designs.

Chain Style: 50 Contemporary Jewelry Designs
Jane Dickerson focuses on the amazing jewelry you can make using chain as the main ingredient.

I keep thinking "it has been done," but no, it hasn't. That's what I love about jewelry over so many other arts and crafts that I have (and continue to) dabble in. The possibilities are really endless.

Valentine's Day is a great excuse to make jewelry. Even if you don't sell it, there's no reason why can't make a few simple jewelry pieces for your close friends or yourself.

I have more Valentine's Day jewelry designs in the works, but for right now, you can load up on what I do have, which is a pretty large number of tutorials, located in this new list of project links: Valentine's Day Jewelry Projects.

As of this post, I have 20+ projects over there with more to come! What about you? Are you making jewelry or crafting other items for this up-coming holiday? Let us know by taking the poll below:

Metal Time at Fire Mountain!

My mom has started to make jewelry, and she has gotten to the point that she realizes the local craft store just doesn't have everything she needs. While she is computer savvy to a certain extent, she doesn't like the idea of buying on-line, so I told her to get a Fire Mountain Gems & Beads catalog, since she could order over the phone. I told her they have almost everything any one making jewelry could want.

A few days after this conversation, I received FMG's latest supplemental catalog for January 2010. Well, I now have to take back the part about how they have almost everything because this vendor has official stepped into the world of metalsmithing. Yup, now FMG carries pretty much everything from pickle pots to torches. If you didn't get the latest supplement, you can see what they have under the company's new Metalsmithing section on-line.

If you did get the supplement, they there are some other interesting goodies in it:

*How to Fabricate a Sterling Silver Pendant project by Linda Brandt
*How to Use Setp Bezel Strips
*5 Ways to Boost Your Beaded Jewelry Sales by Dr. David Weiman
*Close To Your Heart wire necklace project by Tammy
Honaman

Congratulations to Fire Mountain Gems & Beads for stepping into new jewelry making territory.
Metal Time at Fire Mountain! originally appeared on About.com Jewelry Making on Monday, January 25th, 2010 at 07:06:57.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

New Seed Bead Approach

Seed Bead Fusion: 18 Projects to Stitch, Wire and String by Rachel Nelson-Smith brings together wire techniques and seed bead stitches to create some truly unique jewelry designs. Even if you never thought you would want to work with these tiny little beads, you may be surprised by what you find in this new book.

For those who love to bead weave but have been looking for a way to expand and try something really different, and in some cases maybe a little challenging as well, this may also be a book to consider adding to your library.
