Rumors: Apple Tablet Debuts in Mid-2010, for $700, with Conde Nast Content

The rumormill is perpetually excited about the allegedly forthcoming Apple tablet computer, which may or may not run the iPhone OS. Today, that excitement took the form of three separate stories before 1 p.m. eastern.

First, Digitimes, which monitors suppliers in China closely, says that Apple has switched the LCD it will use in the tablet, pushing back launch of the device from the first quarter to sometime in the second half of the year. The tablet may also feature an OLED screen.

Digitimes speculates that the tablet will cost US$1500-$1700. Not so, says market analysis firm Piper Jaffray, which predicts the device will debut with a $500-$700 price tag (and that anything more could kill the device's chances).

Whatever the tablet costs, it seems that it will have some content from high-end magazine publisher Conde Bast available at launch. Conde Nast is reportedly building a digital version of Wired for the platform. Without knowing much about the device, it's hard to imagine how they're doing it, but apparently they are.

Busy day in the world of Apple tablet rumors. I'm looking forward to some real news about it, but it seems we may still be a long ways away from that.

iPod Minis: Another Developer Exit, Software Updates

Another developer has announced that it's abandoning the iPhone app world due to the vagaries of the App Store approval process. This time it's longtime Mac OS developer Rogue Amoeba. I'd say Apple's got a real problem on its hands.
Is Apple considering offering its own iPhone games? This job posting might indicate it is.
Apple has launched a browser-based iTunes preview, which doesn't require the iTunes application to preview music.
Apple has released software version 1.0.2 for the 5th generation iPod nano. It is a free download, available through iTunes.

iPod Minis: Disaffected Developers, iPhone Marketshare, HD movies

The often-controversial App Store approval process has claimed another victim, this time a high-profile one. Joe Hewitt, the developer behind the successful Facebook app, has announced that he's quitting iPhone app development. Hewitt objects to the entire approval process and says he's turning his attention to mobile web development. Here's hoping Apple is paying attention. It can't afford to lose top developers due to these policies.
The iPhone has captured 17% of the world's smartphone market, according to market research firm Gartner.
Apple has added hundreds of new HD movies for rental and purchase, according to MacWorld.

iPod Minis: Security and Bug Fixes

Apple is seeking to hire a new security manager for the iPhone
And not a moment too soon, as the first worm hits jailbroken phones
And as a developer is accused of stealing users' phone numbers
In less scary news, Apple has updated the Apple TV to OS version 3.0.1, which fixes a disappearing content bug from last week's 3.0 update. The free update can be downloaded using these instructions.
Chipmaker Gigabyte has released a fix for syncing issues between the iPhone and the Intel P55 chipset
Fortune magazine has named Steve Jobs CEO of the Decade. Doesn't seem unreasonable. What do you think?

iPod Minis: TV Subscription, Music Movies, Chinese iPhone

I'm changing the name of these short news items (no more iEphemera). I like this name better - wish I'd thought of it a year ago.

Reportedly, Apple is pitching a US$30/month subscription to TV through iTunes to media companies. Response from studios and networks is, reportedly, tepid so far.
Despite being the world's biggest market and the iPhone being a new product there, China Unicom has reportedly seen disappointing sales of the iPhone. Perhaps the $1,000 price has something to do with it?
Apple is launching a new section of the iTunes Store, focusing on music movies, with exclusive content and early release dates
The App Store is now officially over the 100,000 app mark
