Broadway & Off-Broadway Internships

Ken Davenport, Broadway and Off-Broadway producer, introduces several of his interns for fall semester�and announced today that he is still seeking more interns for�spring. Ken is currently the only independent producer to have have three Off-Broadway shows running at the same time.�One of Ken's current projects is adapting the novel and film Somewhere in Time into a Broadway musical.

Internship opportunities are available in General Management, Marketing and Group Sales, Internet Marketing and Design, and Company Management. Students interested in participating in a Winter/Spring Semester internship must be willing to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week from January through April. Students will be paid a stipend of $500 upon successfully completing the internship.

Writing Your Resume

If you are like many students, you may be beginning to think about what you're going to do next summer. If you'd like to get some work experience by doing a summer internship, now's a good time to develop and/or update your resume.

�Resume writing can be done in stages and it's really not as difficult as you might think it is. By beginning to get your experiences down on paper, you'll be surprised at how fast it actually goes. Of course you can go to your college's Career Services Office for assistance or to have them look it over once it is completed.

The important thing is to get it started so that your resume is ready to send out once you've identified some internship opportunities.

ESPN Should Be Applauded

Hooray for ESPN and their decision to fire Steve Phillips�over his recent affair with his production assistan and former intern.� More organizations should follow ESPN's example by exemplifying a morality that educators, parents, and students should expect from the entertainment, sports, political, and business organizations who offer internships and jobs to college students in order to supposedly help them gain the relevant experience they need to obtain future employment in today's job market.

A few weeks ago I mentioned the irresponsible use of power used by David Letterman and that sexual harassment�of our young people should not be tolerated.� Anyone with a high profile, celebrity status yielding power over individuals who are inexperienced and may possess a feeling of insecurity, should not be able to get away with such behavior.�

Although older more experienced workers in the workplace may know what they're getting into and are truly consensual adults, young interns are unknowing and may interpret special interest by their superior as something very real and lasting in terms of a relationship.� I applaud ESPN's decision and hope other organizations follow suit and have the courage to behave responsibly.

Interns Fare Better in the Job Market

A recent Student Survey conducted by The National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) has confirmed that new graduates from the Class of 2009 who completed one or more internships while in college fared much better when seeking jobs in the current economic downturn than their peers who did not do an internship.

The report showed that 23% of students who did an internship was given a job offer versus only 14% of those that didn't.� Only 19.7% of those students who had applied for internships had received a job offer by April 2009.� More than 16,500 from over 840 colleges and universities from across the country had completed the survey.

Overall, just 19.7 percent of the Class of 2009 who had applied for jobs had one by the end of April, but grads with an internship under their belt beat that average--23 percent had a job in hand. For those who didn't do an internship, the job market was especially unwelcoming: Just 14 percent of those who hadn't been interns landed jobs.

The competitiveness of today's job market can only predict that the same will hold true for the Class of 2010. For students thinking that doing an internship is an option, should begin to think again when looking ahead to the eventual job search. Employers have repeatedly�expressed that they prefer candidates�who possess the skills required to do the job; while students�wonder how can employers expect them to have experience when they've been in college for the past four years.� Internships are the answer and they are the bridge that�brings the student from the academic world into the real world of the job market.�

Students from all majors are encouraged to apply for one of� the Dow Jones Newspaper Internships offered each year. DJNF is looking for applicants for business reporting who are in the sophomore, junior, or senior year.

Additional internships are also available in multimedia, news, business reporting, and sports copy editing.��US students studying abroad as well as international students are eligible to apply.��

The Rising Popularity of Virtual Internships

Today's technology and the rising use of social media is making the whole phenomena of virtual internships not only possible, but growing rapidly in numbers as well.� Today CNN ran an article, "Internship from your sofa becomes virtual reality",� that talks about the growing popularity of virtual internships and how employers now have the ability to tap into talent from almost anywhere in the world. In September of this year, the Wall Street Journal ran another article�on virtual internships entitled, "An Internship from your Couch."

Many�employers that I speak with on a regular basis often tell me that given the right student, many of the internships they offer can be done remotely with students never having to leave their dorm rooms. Due to the ease with which college students navigate the internet and their personal experience using� social media, the ability to work from campus�offers unique advantages to both themselves and to�employers where they wish to work.

Employers can give students�projects�to work on�without having to worry about providing physical space where students are able to do the�work; while students get to complete the required work on their own�time before, after, or in-between �classes, homework assignments, and the various co-curricular and volunteer activities that they are involved in.� This arrangement for many students and employers is a win-win situation for both parties.�Urban Interns, a site that connects small businesses with part-time workers, lists approximately 25% of its internships with companies who are interested in having students work for them online.

The down side to virtual internships is that students do not get the opportunity to work directly with people on a one-on-one basis and this may preclude them from getting experience in developing personal communication and interpersonal skills on the job.� Students also do not get a chance to experience what's it's like working in a corporate� environment and may miss out on developing satisfying work relationships and the chance to build the skills necessary to work�effectively with a team.

Students who have the opportunity to do some of the work at the employers site while completing projects from their own computers on campus probably affords the intern with the best experience possible.� They get the chance to work alongside people while also making valuable use of their time by being able to complete some of their projects on their own time and in their own space.

Deadlines Approaching for University of Dreams Scholarships

I am happy to announce that Eric Normington, University of Dreams chief marketing officer, contacted me today to let me know that University of Dreams has made over $100,000 available in order to offer 12 full or partial Scholarships for the Summer of 2010.��Each scholarship lists its own criteria to apply�and selection will be based on demonstrated financial need, unique eligibility requirements, completed essay, and any other supplemental materials required by the scholarship. Be sure to check out internship eligibility on the website.

Also, applicants interested in applying for one of the scholarships�must be sure to enter the Promo Code: UODSCHOLAR2010�when applying to ensure consideration�for an award.� The application fee is $35 but Eric told me that by using the Promotional Code: UODSCHOLAR15 the fee will be reduced to $20 to apply for the program which� is required for all applicants.�The deadline to apply for an internship (and scholarship) is October 30. All eligible applicants will be emailed detailed instructions on how to apply for the�scholarship of their choice.

Decisions on scholarship selection�will be announced on November 17th. Interested students who are not selected for a scholarship are still eligible for the program but would be required to pay the normal fees for being part of a University of Dreams internship. Program dates�and costs�for 2010�can be checked out on the website as well.
