Planning for Spring Semester

Well just a few more days and college's will be slowing down for that well deserved Thanksgiving holiday. For the past several weeks I've noticed many stressed out students in my office as they just completed mid-term exams and work to get papers handed in on time. I know from past experience that even the Thanksgiving holiday isn't all rest and relaxation as students work to get caught up on school work.

Although I understand that this is a very busy and somewhat stressful time, I'd like to remind you that if you are hoping to do an internship for spring semester that you begin to contact employers now. If you'd like to know more about planning for a spring internship, please sign up to view this week's Internship newsletter.

You can also visit your college's Career Center to find out more about all of the local internships they have listed with their office. You can also speak with faculty members to find out what other students have done in your area of interest. The important thing to remember is that if you wait until after winter break to find an internship for spring, it will probably be too late.

Resume Writing

If you are like many students, you may be beginning to think about what you're going to do next summer. If you'd like to get some work experience by doing a summer internship, now's a good time to develop and/or update your resume.

Resume writing can be done in stages and it's really not as difficult as you might think it is. By beginning to get your experiences down on paper, you'll be surprised at how fast it actually goes. Of course you can go to your college's Career Services Office for assistance or to have them look it over once it is completed. The important thing is to get it started so that your resume is ready to send out once you've identified some internship opportunities.

Get a Leg Up on Thanksgiving

Although Thanksgiving break does not provide much time to complete any major projects if you want to have time to�relax and�spend some quality�time with friends and family, it is an excellent opportunity to put together or update your resume.

Once you have your resume prepared, you will be ready to begin applying for internships as they are posted. You will also be ready to engage in some networking during winter break since alumni and/or professionals you contact will often ask to see a copy of your resume and you will want to have it ready to send out to them when they ask.

INTERNSHIP PICK OF THE WEEK The Watson School of Biological Sciences

The Watson School of Biological Sciences summer Undergraduate Research Program located at�The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) offers opportunities for 20 - 25 students to participate in their summer Undergraduate Research Program (URP) each year.

Students get a chance to�learn more about conducting research in areas such as genetics, cell biology, neurobiology, and molecular biology.� Undergraduate students learn about scientific reasoning laboratory methods, theoretical principles, and scientific communication. The program is a great hands-on experience for any science student looking to conduct research for the summer.

Students are assigned independent �research projects in areas of cancer biology, neurobiology, plant biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular and structural biology, or computational biology.

Benefits:

Students receive a $4,000 stipend plus room and board on a beautiful 100 acre campus.� Students also attend a series of seminars and special events specially assigned for them by the Laboratory's senior staff.� Students are also encouraged to attend courses and have the opportunity to learn the latest experimental techniques currently being used in scientific research.

Location:

The summer Undergraduate Research Program takes place in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.

Qualifications:

The URP is open to all sophomore or junior matriculated college student from anywhere in the world who possesses a strong academic background.�

Can't Find a Job?

For new graduates and current college seniors the current economy may seem more of a nightmare than a reality. That prestigious job you hoped to land right out of college may now seem unattainable.� You may be beginning to wonder if all of the education and the student loans you are now faced with are actually worth the price.

Although that dream job may seem a stretch right now, finding an internship or volunteering for a worthwhile cause can set the stage for opening new doors and opportunities as well as a way to gain additional knowledge and skills that will make you more marketable to employers. The key is not giving up and finding ways to survive through these difficult times.

Support Available for Hispanic Students Interested in STEM Careers

A press release just out yesterday announced a $ 400 million program supporting future leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to Hispanic students.

Each Alliance/Merck Ciencia Scholar recipient will receive up to $42,500 in college scholarships and summer research support over the course of the next four years.� The Alliance also announded that 25 Hispanic college students that were majoring in a STEM field are recipients of $2,000 in Ciencia National Scholarships that will help them to complete their education.�

This program has been made possible through a $4 million grant from The Merck Company Foundation. Mentorship opportunities are also available with the program.

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU)�has applications available online for 2010 (23^rd season)�offering eight week internships to approximately 30 - 35 of the best and brightest college students from around the world who are of Armenian descent.�

About the Internships:

College students gather each year in New York City in order to get the knowledge and skills required to pursue their future careers. Students are placed in full time internships depending on their interests, skills, and career goals. Past students have held internships at companies such as: Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch, Columbia University Medical Center, Eurasia Group, Rothschild, AXA Advisors, Entertainment Weekly, Isaac Mizrahi, the National Hockey League, along with many other prestigious companies and institutions.�

Broadway & Off-Broadway Internships

Ken Davenport, Broadway and Off-Broadway producer, introduces several of his interns for fall semester�and announced today that he is still seeking more interns for�spring. Ken is currently the only independent producer to have have three Off-Broadway shows running at the same time.�One of Ken's current projects is adapting the novel and film Somewhere in Time into a Broadway musical.

Internship opportunities are available in General Management, Marketing and Group Sales, Internet Marketing and Design, and Company Management. Students interested in participating in a Winter/Spring Semester internship must be willing to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week from January through April. Students will be paid a stipend of $500 upon successfully completing the internship.
