Inline hockey skates show up in skating classes, on trails and in rinks everywhere but not always for roller hockey game use. Hockey skates are great for intermediate to advanced inline skaters who do not have a specific inline sport in mind, but skate well enough to live without a heel brake. They are usually easy to find new or used and are affordably priced.

Inline hockey players need a combination of support, comfort, speed, maneuverability and durability in their equipment that works for most inline basic skills training and recreational needs, too. They even have a short enough frame and wheelbase to execute many of the inline figure skating edge and turn techniques. If you are a beginner or signing up for lessons, check with your instructor first, because hockey skates do not have a heel brake or toe stop. But a good skater could have a little indoor or outdoor fun without a puck or stick with inline hockey skates.

2013 � Fair Play to the Planet

The last World Games were held in Kaohsiung, TPE, in July of 2009. At that time, International World Games Association (IWGA) President Ron Froehlich announced the Executive Committee's final decision to grant the hosting rights to Cali, Columbia in 2013.

Cali will be the stage for the multi-sport games along with two other cities in the Cauca Valley from 25 July to 4 August 2013. The Opening Ceremony will be held on 25 July, which is also the day the City of Cali will have its' centennial celebration. The organizers are preparing to promote the full breadth of IWGA sports to the world, and to bring about significant change to the nation, region and cities.

The slogan for The World Games 2013 is Fair Play to the Planet. The COC is committed to paying special attention to environmental friendliness in all its actions. The city of Cali, also known as "Heaven's Branch Office," and frequently labeled the "Sporting Capital of the Americas," will provide and excellent competitive environment during the World Games 2013.

Slalom Has Shadow Skating

Any good Friday or Saturday night rink session will have at least a few good jam skaters doing shadow skating around the floor. But, some members of the World Slalom Skating Association (WSSA) take shadowing to a much higher level.

In these team or pairs freestyle slalom events - sometimes called jam slalom, two or more skaters, like Lan Wang Heng and Pu Hao Yang or Feng Hui and Zhang Hao, do mirror-image routines around rows of slalom cones. The rules for these team performances are similar to singles slalom, but choreography, coordination and synchronization are even more important when you multiply the number of skaters.

There are even mixed pairs like Wang Shen-Wen and Huang Yu-Hsuan. But, since the teams are not classified by age or sex group, the mixed pairs do not have a separate event.

The Angle on Ankles and Feet

One of my artistic skating students was having ankle problems, and that is always a big issue for any inline or roller skater. Her weak ankle problem was resolved by changing her skating boot brand to one that provided the support needed - in the places she needed it. Now, the same skater is plagued by foot pain and blisters on her feet that seem to be caused by her low-cut speed roller derby skates (she skates art and derby)... back to the boot specialist.

Every roller sport and every skater has a different set of fitting concerns. Blisters, calluses and other bumps, foot movement in the boot, rubbing, pronation, supination and more can cause a lot of discomfort and skating issues. That is when it's time to get professional help from boot fitters and pro shops that specialize in correcting skaters' foot problems.

A Weekend of World Inline

It is too late to enter, but not too late to watch a world of inline figure skating events - if you happen to be in France. This weekend on Saturday January 28th and Sunday January 29th the annual "Open International de Paris 2012" will take place at the Gymnasium de la Plaine 13 Rue du Général Guillaumat 75015 in Paris. Inline artistic dance and figure skaters from all over the world are expected at this World Inline Figure Skating Association (WIFSA) event.

For several seasons the Open International was the only competition in the world for inline figure and dance skating only. Today, WIFSA offers other events, proficiency testing and workshops for inline figure skaters. The competition on the WIFSA schedule will be the World Inline Figure Skating and Dance Open 2012 that will take place on Friday June 29th, Saturday June 30th and Sunday July 1st this year.

Rollermagic Goes to Soul Roll

The Southgate Orange Patch reports that two USA Roller Sports competitive skaters - who skate for Debbie Lewis and represent the All American Rollermagic Team in New Jersey's South Amboy Arena - will go to Florida for the Soul Roll Invitational Skate Jam.

Julia Harvey is a 16 year-old junior at Columbia High School, and Lacey Picinich is an 18 year-old senior at Parsippany Hills High School. They will do a "Burlesque" skating number in the "Skate for your Life" event. This American Idol styled contest will take place in Tampa, Florida on Friday, January 13 and is part of the weekend-long Soul Roll.

The Door is Open for Inline

This season's annual "Open International de Paris 2012" inline artistic dance and figure skating competition is almost here. On Saturday January 28th and Sunday January 29th, 2012 inline figure skaters from all over the world are invited by Jean-Pierre Faugère to show and share their skating accomplishments at the Gymnasium de la Plaine 13 Rue du Général Guillaumat 75015 Paris, France. More information about this event and artistic inline skating is available from the World Inline Figure Skating Association (WIFSA).

This annual event used to be the only competition in the world dedicated exclusively to inline figure and dance skating. Now WIFSA is working to provide other events, testing centers and training opportunities for inline figure skating athletes. Their next big competition will be the World Inline Figure Skating and Dance Open 2012 that will take place on Friday June 29th, Saturday June 30th and Sunday July 1st later this season.
