They sound similar and some people think they have the same function, but though they're both cookware items or electric appliances (they come in either format), they have a unique difference that you can easily spot when shopping for them.
Smaller (Cheaper) Induction Cooking Options

If you've been thinking of induction cooking but replacing your current range is not high on your priority or budget list, there's a couple of ways you can break into this faster mode of cooking, without a major investment.

One option is to install a small induction cooktop on your countertop. This Summit SINC2220 12" cooktop is a nice size with two cooking zones, 8 power levels, pot detection sensor and nice safety features. Beware - it would require installation though, so be prepared to read the manufacturer's guide for best final results. Summit also has a one heating zone model, the SINC1110 if smaller is better for you.

Buy Direct

If you're not familiar with induction, you may want to review my article on Induction Cooking to learn more about this cooking method. Induction cooking does require special magnetic cookware, since the cooktop heats only the pan.

Compare Prices of Induction Cookware

If installing a counter cooktop is not something you want to consider, a less intrusive option is to buy one piece of cookware and a one-burner freestanding or portable unit like this Sunpentown SR-951T Micro Induction 12" Electric Cooktop. Portability makes this unit very convenient - you can place it where you need it, even on the patio. I should note though that small portable units may be inadequate for extra large pans and more suitable for small-to-mid size pots, depending on the design.

Compare Price

Adding one or two extra burners to your kitchen can relieve range cooktop congestion and increase your cooking capacity especially when making large meals.

Changing Appliance Filters Helps!

You might remember reading in your humidifier or air purifier manual something about changing filters occasionally and I know how easy it is to forget this all-too-important maintenance step. Changing filters has more benefit than just making the appliance, whether it's an air quality product or a vacuum, more efficient. It can help to reduce allergens in your home and when it comes to furnaces, changing the filter can improve that warm air that circulates through your whole home. Find out the benefits of changing appliance filters and be proactive when it comes to appliance care - it's fairly simple and easy to do. And you might even save some money in the long run.

Oil-Less Frying With the Big Easy

Oil-less frying - the term sounds somewhat contradictory and some could even argue that it's not frying at all. But whatever you call it, frying without oil takes all the fear and worry out of frying in an outdoor cooker. I was curious to see (and taste) how a turkey fried in an oil-less fryer would turn out. You may have heard the term infrared technology - in fact I think there are saunas that use a similar heat process, but I had never cooked (or fried) with it before. Apply this heating process - or rather frying - to food, and you get a nice crisp exterior with juices and flavor sealed in. So, don't stay too long in those saunas!

Now, this is not necessarily a speed cooking process, though it did cook the turkey in much less time than in the oven and it was comparable to oil frying. Other tested meats took a little longer than expected, but I can blame that on the weather. I think I'm hooked on this style of outdoor frying, especially for turkeys and large cuts of meat. If you're looking for an alternative turkey cooking method for Thanksgiving, you may want to consider it - it can handle up to a 16-lb bird. Learn more about Char-Broil's the Big Easy Outdoor Fryer and find out how it performed in my Big Easy review.

Should You Splurge or Save on Knives?

Turkey Time's a Coming - Do You Have All You Need?

Cooking a turkey is easy, but it's making sure you have all you need when it comes to a roaster or cooker, transferring tools and serving items to make the whole event, from cooking to enjoying, a delightful affair. One important serving item that often gets forgotten till serving time, is a turkey platter. There are lots of beautifully patterned and colorful platters, but sometimes it's hard to decide on a particular color or pattern. That's where white is always a good choice - classic, elegant and practical. It goes with any tableware, anytime of the year. This Pfaltzgraff turkey platter is part of their Solid Color Tableware Collection - where you can mix and match colors to suit your mood and table. The turkey platter is large, has a simple embossed pattern and the scalloped trim adds a nice touch.
