Evil Dead Returning to Theaters...to Build Buzz for Evil Dead 4?

Perhaps buoyed by the success of midnight screenings of Paranormal Activity, the creators of the gory 1981 cult classic The Evil Dead (including director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell) will be bringing the film back to theaters in 2010. They will be showcasing the movie at midnight showings in Landmark theaters across the US, plus Mayfair Cinema locations in Canada (and at other to-be-named spots) sometime next year. Other than the chance for fans to experience the film on the big screen, no ulterior motive has been announced for the re-release, but Evil Deadheads have to wonder if this isn't designed to help drum up excitement for a long-rumored remake or (hopefully) sequel. Theater listings will eventually be posted on GindhouseReleasing.com.

Direct-to-Video Sequels on the Horizon: Mirrors, 30 Days of Night, Cabin Fever Coming in 2010

Three high-profile 20th century theatrical horror releases -- Mirrors, 30 Days of Night and Cabin Fever -- are spawning sequels, but none of them appear to be headed to a theater near you.

Mirrors II features a pair of direct-to-video sequel veterans: director Victor Garcia (Return to the House on Haunted Hill) and writer Matt Venne (White Noise 2: The Light) and stars Nick Stahl (Terminator 3) as a night watchman in a department store who begins to see a mysterious woman in the store's mirrors. The film begins shooting this month.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days, meanwhile, began shooting in October and features a strong cast, including Kiele Sanchez (A Perfect Getaway), Harold Perrineau (Lost), Diora Baird (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), Rhys Coiro (The Unborn) and Mia Kirshner (The L Word). That said, this sequel, which continues the story of Alaskan cop Stella (Sanchez replacing Melissa George) seeking revenge on the vampires who decimated her town, still appears to be going straight to video.

Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever is the only one of the three films that's finished and should see the light of day around February 2010, even though director Ti West has disowned it. The story follows the deadly virus as it travels from the woods into bottled drinking water and eventually ending up at a high school prom.

Train: The Little Engine That Could've Been a Remake

The movie Train began as a Thora Birch-headed remake of the '80s Jamie Lee Curtis ~~classic~~ competent slasher Terror Train, but at some point, the powers that be bucked the remake trend and decided to downsize the title and go with a whole new plot involving college athletes and eastern European organ harvesters. Will this unusual restraint pay off? Well, it's going straight to video, so commercially it might not work out, but we'll see how it turns out creatively when Train is released on November 17. In the meantime, check out the trailer and these pics.

Paranormal Activity the Most Profitable Movie Ever

Even before it raked in another $16 million this past weekend, Paranormal Activity had become the most profitable movie of all time, with a 434,000% return on investment that surpassed The Blair Witch Project's 414,000% ROI. This figure takes into account only the haunted house pic's $15,000 production budget (including a whopping $500 salary for each of the stars) and not the $10 million spent on marketing. By comparison, the movie Zombieland, itself a hit, would have to make more than $100 BILLION at the box office to bring in a 434,000% ROI.

Can we look forward to a flood of similar micro-budget fright flicks seeking to hit the box office lottery? Hollywood might be infamous for running a successful formula into the ground, but it surprisingly never did so with Blair Witch, so it's not a sure thing that we'll see a lot of Paranormal copycats.

Twilight Returning to Theaters

In preparation for the release of New Moon on November 20, Summit Entertainment will be re-releasing its prequel, Twilight, on the 19th for a one day-only showing in over 2,000 theaters nationwide. Apparently, some sparkle-impaired cities will have discounted tickets.

After Dark Horrorfest 2010: Five Films Named, Three to Go

The fourth annual (or thereabouts) After Dark Horrorfest is slowly but surely taking shape, with five of the eight movies now having been named (the latest being Zombies of Mass Destruction); read about them here.
