Horror is a popular whipping boy within the mainstream media and even amongst a certain segment of horror fans who never seem satisfied with the state of the genre. Underworld 4 in January 2011?

Even though Underworld: Rise of the Lycans was the least popular of the three movies in the vampires-versus-werewolves series (the other one), that isn't preventing a fourth Underworld from being made. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a writer has been hired, and production should start next year. Len Wiseman, who helmed the first two films, will produce but not direct, lessening the odds that his wife Kate Beckinsale will return as leather-clad vampiress Selene. No plot has been announced, but a January 21, 2011 release date is targeted.

New Moon Smashes Box Office Records

New Moon beat even the most optimistic of projections this past weekend by racking up an estimated $140 million at the box office, the third-highest opening weekend in history -- trailing only The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3. That figure includes a record one-day gross of $72.7 million, which itself includes a record take of $26.3 million from opening night midnight showings -- enough money to maybe boost the shirt budget for the next film. Final numbers are due late Monday.

It's Official: Stephen King's Under the Dome Being Made for TV...Now with More Spielberg!

Stephen and Steven might sound like an '80s detective show, but it will actually be a teaming of entertainment titans, with ~~Stephen~~ Steven Spielberg's studio DreamWorks signing on to the previously rumored TV adaptation of ~~Steven~~ Stephen King's latest novel, Under the Dome. Variety calls the project a "limited series," which I assume means a miniseries, although I've always thought that more TV shows should adopt the telenovela format and run for just a few months. No writer, cast or even channel has been attached to Dome, but Showtime seems like a logical destination, given DreamWorks' recent association with the channel (United States of Tara).

New Host, Judges for Scream Queens Season 2

As reported last week, Scream Queens is returning for a second season, with James Gunn being replaced as one of the judges. Now we know not only who's replacing him -- director Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs, Driftwood) -- but we find out that judge/hostess Shawnee Smith will also not be returning. In her place will be actress Jamie King (pictured), whose horror resume includes My Bloody Valentine 3D, The Tripper and the upcoming Mother's Day remake. And, as expected, the prize will be a role in Saw VII...in 3-D!

Paranormal Activity DVD Might Come Sooner Than You Think

Although there's no official word yet, a couple of sources are indicating that the DVD for the smash hit Paranormal Activity might hit shelves as early as December. MoviesOnline.ca is reporting that the DVD will be released on December 29 -- just in time for...no particular gift-giving occasion. VideoETA, meanwhile, estimates a January release date. Either way, the home video release would come an unusually brief 10 to 15 weeks following the movie's wide release in theaters -- perhaps an attempt to strike while the iron's hot on this faddish film.
