Thanksgiving in New York City

While most Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with their families at home, New York City is a wonderful place to spend Thanksgiving with your family -- if for no other reason than to experience the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in person. The 83rd Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade will feature three new balloons: Shrek, Hello Kitty and Abby Caddaby, as well as numerous floats, marching bands and more. If you're in town for Thanksgiving, you might also want to check out the balloons being inflated on Wednesday afternoon/evening near the American Museum of Natural History from 3-10 p.m.

A Christmas Carol Manuscript on View at The Morgan

The Morgan Library & Museum will feature a special exhibition, Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol from through January 10, 2010 as part of their holiday programming. Visitors will be able to see the original manuscript of A Christmas Carol, as written by Charles Dickens in just six-weeks in late 1843. The Museum's annual Winter Family Day Celebration featuring art workshops, costumed characters, and special performances will take place on Sunday, December 6, 2009 from 2-5 p.m. Singers from Mannes College The New School for Music will present traditional and popular holiday music on Fridays, December 11 and 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Museum admission is free during Mannes College performances, and every Friday from 7-9 p.m.)

Tim Burton Retrospective at MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art will be hosting a Tim Burton Retrospective from November 22, 2009 through April 26, 2010. The exhibit will feature over 700 pieces, including rarely or never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, storyboards, moving-image works, puppets, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, from his earliest childhood drawings through his work in film. During the course of the exhibition all of Burton's 14 feature films will be screened in MoMA's Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985) and Beetlejuice (1988) to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Sweeney Todd (2007), as well as some early short films.

2010 Winter Restaurant Week Dates Announced!

Once again, Winter Restaurant Week will return to New York City this winter from January 25-February 7, 2009. This is the 19th year for Restaurant Week (which actually runs for two weeks, excluding Saturdays), and they've kept prices the same as the past few years -- the three-course prix-fixe lunch will be $24.07 and dinner will be $35.

This year's participating restaurants have not yet been announced, but you can check out our list of restaurants participating in the past to get some ideas, as many restaurants participate year after year.

Traveling The Silk Road Exhibit at AMNH

From November 14, 2009 - August 15, 2010 visitors to the American Museum of Natural History can explore "Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World." The exhibition features many interactive experiences for children and adults in an effort to bring to life one of the greatest trading routes in human history. The exhibition highlights goods, cultures, and technologies from four representative cities: Xi'an, China's Tang Dynasty capital; Turfan, a verdant oasis and trading outpost; Samarkand, home of prosperous merchants who thrived on the caravan trade; and Baghdad, a fertile hub of commerce and scholarship that became the intellectual center of the era. Children will collect stamps in their Silk Road passports as they explore the exhibition using all of their senses and on Sunday afternoons, the exhibition will feature live musical performances courtesy of The Silk Road Project.

Kids' Night on Broadway Returns!

The 14th Annual Kids' Night On Broadway offers children 6-18 the opportunity to see select Broadway shows for free when accompanied by a paying adult -- quite a deal when Broadway tickets can easily cost over $100 each! Starting today (November 9, 2009) at noon, tickets will go on sale for performances on Tuesday, February 2, Wednesday, February 3 and Sunday, February 7, 2009. The second ticket must be used by a child ages 6-18 (they may ask for ID when in doubt at the theater), and tickets must be purchased in multiples of two (each ticket will be issued at half price). Over 20 Broadway and Off-Broadway productions are participating, including Avenue Q, Hair!, Billy Elliot: The Musical and Wicked.

33rd Annual Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival at AMNH

From November 12-15, 2009, the American Museum of Natural History will once again host the Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival. This four day film festival features documentaries that help viewers to better understand the diversity of the world's peoples and cultures, to honor the legacy of famed anthropologist Margaret Mead. The 2009 Festival will screen 33 documentaries which are set around the world -- from Alaska and Brooklyn to Africa and the Ukraine.
