London Dungeon: Bloody Mary

The London Dungeon is adding another scary attraction for the February school half-term (next week): Bloody Mary: Killer Queen.

Featuring one of England's most feared rulers - Mary Tudor, the deadliest daughter of Henry VIII, this Killer Queen was nicknamed Bloody Mary for ordering around 300 horrifying murders in her brief but brutal five year reign (1553-1558).

Guests are transported back to London in 1556 where the fanatically Catholic Queen is burning Protestants at the stake. Special effects conjure up the sights, screams and overwhelming stench of fiery execution as another helpless "heretic" endures one of the most painful deaths known to man - being slowly burnt alive.

Rhodes Chocolate Special This Week

Gary Rhodes' elegant fine dining restaurant, Rhodes W1, has retained its coveted Michelin star for the third year running. To celebrate, Gary's prot�g� and head chef, Paul Welburn, has created a delicious trio of chocolate desserts - 'Hot Chocolate Molleux', 'Malted Milk Chocolate Ice Cream' and 'White Chocolate Snow' - which are available in the restaurant till Friday 12 February 2010.

This chocolate lover's dream is available as part of the three course � la carte menu priced at �49.90 per person. Diners who choose the pudding will also receive a complimentary glass of dessert wine, chosen especially by the Sommelier.

Rhodes W1 was awarded its Michelin star in 2008, within one year of opening. Designed by Kelly Hoppen, the stunning restaurant is decorated with glamorous Spina crystal chandeliers and antique mirrors, draped in lush purple fabric. Eye-catching French chairs which are printed with some of Gary's recipes in his own unique handwriting, are the highlight of the room.

London Aquarium: Rainforests Coming

Plans are now in progress for the next chapter in the revitalization of the Sea Life London Aquarium as work gets underway on a new Rainforests of the World area featuring exotic aquatic creatures including crocodiles, Piranhas and a family of Poison Arrow Frogs.

The transformation of the attraction into one of Europe's leading aquatic experiences has proved a huge success story with record numbers of guests visiting since its re-launch. The new area will be ready in time to mark the first anniversary of the attraction's re-opening last Easter and is scheduled to open in March 2010.

The building work requires the transfer of 750 creatures including Terrapins, Catfish and Giant Gourami by a team of specialist marine biologists. The creatures will be re-homed in temporary premises on site before being settled back into their new home, along with some exciting new arrivals, in early March. Containing 100,000 liters of water - the equivalent of 5000 goldfish bowls - the draining of the displays and fish transfer will be a significant operation.

Rainforests of the World will totally replace the existing rainforest area and promises to take guests on an exciting themed journey through the vulnerable eco-systems of Malaysia, West Africa and South America.

The new experience completes a total overhaul of the South Bank attraction, which features thousands of marine creatures from every part of the world including 46 sharks and some breathtaking features including a stunning tropical glass tunnel walkway and a nerve testing Shark Walk finale.

Half Term February 2010

Ron Arad at The Barbican

This exhibition traces the development of Arad's designs from his early post-punk approach to his exclusive, technologically-advanced sculptural furnishings made of highly polished metals. Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Soft Opening

After nearly 10 years of planning and more than two years of construction, the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel launches its soft opening today (4 February 2010).

During the soft opening period, the hotel will offer limited availability as it undergoes final preparations including the completion of its full-service spa, swimming pool and gym. The �350 million hotel is situated at the foot of Westminster Bridge in the heart of London's buzzing South Bank with uninterrupted views to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Context Travel London Walk Review

Not so much a walking tour as a "walking seminar", Context Travel offers tours for the "intellectually curious". The small groups are led by docents (scholars) who have that sort of incredible knowledge the rest of us dream about.

I tried the Portrait of a City walk which is a three-hour tour of the oldest area of London. I'd heard it might feel like returning to university but, as there was no coursework and it was simply the opportunity to learn more about my favorite subject (London) from a scholar while walking around the city, I had a wonderful time, even if it was a very cold day.
