There's a new border crossing just opened between Greece and Bulgaria at Thermes-Zlatograd , with another one near Komotini slated to open later this year. This brings the total number of Bulgarian crossings to four, giving those planning to drive through Europe to Greece a couple of additional choices.

However, there are many ways to drive to Greece. If you have limited time in Europe and want to spend a substantial portion of your stay in Greece, it won't make sense in terms of time, but it can be an extremely memorable way of exploring the countries surrounding Greece.

While most travelers expect that gas will be their biggest expense, it's usually hotel and especially overnight car ferry fees which drive up the bill, depending on the routes you choose. Few make it a 100% road trip, but it's more possible than ever.

Want to get away from it all, but perhaps you're not quite sure what you want to get away to? The tiny seaside village of Diafani on the very traditional island of Karpathos lists it out for you in a charming way in "What Diafani Has and Has Not" . It's designed to prevent tourists who really meant to go to Paradise Beach on Mykonos from being disappointed - but I think most of us in search of a true Greek island escape would agree it's exactly the list we need.
