The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month

November 11 is Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day. It is, of course, the anniversary of the end of World War I 91 years ago, and it is a day for remembering those who died in the wars.

In November 1997, then Australian Governor-General Sir William Deane formally proclaimed November 11 Remembrance Day and urged all Australians to observe one minute's silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

While Remembrance Day is thus observed in Australia, the better-known "remembrance" day in Australia (and New Zealand) is actually Anzac Day on April 25 each year.

Ceremonies take place on November 11 at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and in many other cities and towns. Across the country Australians observing the day pause for a minute's silence at 11am in remembrance of the fallen.

Festival Time in Fremantle

It's Fremantle Festival time from November 7 to 15, a whole week of celebrations and fun bookended by two weekends.

The 2009 Fremantle Festival is a celebration of the unique, stimulating and colorful culture that enriches Fremantle and invites participation of all cultural, ethnic, arts and community groups.

The festival traditionally includes a number of free events, and this year these include the Fremantle Proms festival opening event, Norfolk Lane Youth Festival, Wardarnji Aboriginal Cultural Celebration, and Carnival Day.

The Fremantle Fringe Festival takes place during the entire Fremantle Festival period.

Changingoftheguard Scratched from Melbourne Cup

Changingoftheguard has been scratched from the Melbourne Cup, leaving 23 horses to vie for the Cup to be run at 3pm today, November 3, Australian eastern daylight saving time. (It's already November 3 in Australia.)

Changingofthe guard is trained by David Hayes and was to be ridden by Glen Boss who rode Makybe Diva to her three successive Melbourne Cup triumphs.

At 7.30am today, Viewed remained favorite for the Cup, followed by stablemate Roman Emperor and the lightly raced Alcopop. In the afternoon, Viewed and Alcopop were neck-and-neck in favoritism.

Viewed Is Outright Melbourne Cup Favorite

It's the day before the running of this year's Melbourne Cup and betting support for 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed, trained by Cups King Bart Cummings, has pushed the seasoned track veteran into outright favoritism.

The lightly raced Alcopop, with four wins from his last four starts, is second favorite while Cummings' Roman Emperor is third favorite.

Cummings, with 12 Melbourne Cup wins under his belt, has three runners in this year's big race: Viewed, Roman Emperor and longer-priced Allez Wonder.

Viewed and Alcopop shared favoritism for this year's Melbourne Cup after the runners were announced after the last race on Victoria Derby Day.

Viewed is last year's Melbourne Cup and this year's Caulfield Cup winner. The less-credentialed gelding, Alcopop, has won his last four starts and is becoming a sentimental choice in Tuesday's big race.

Monaco Consul Wins Victoria Derby

Monaco Consul has won the Victoria Derby, followed by Extra Zero, second, and Viking Legend, third.

Pre-race favorites for the Derby were Rockferry and Monaco Consul followed by Onemorenomore. Early favorite Shamoline Warrior, winner of his last two starts, was scratched

The Victoria Derby is run over 2500 metres at Flemington Racecourse.

Victoria Derby Day is the last major race meeting in Melbourne before the Melbourne Cup.

Will Cups King Cummings Win a 13th Melbourne Cup?

Victorian trainer Bart Cummings, renowned as Australia's Cups King, is expected to have at least three runners — Viewed, Roman Emperor and Allez Wonder — in the Melbourne Cup run on Tuesday, November 3.

Viewed, winner of last year's Melbourne Cup and this year's Caulfield Cup is sharing favoritism with 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and lightly raced gelding Alcopop at today's fixed odds of $6.50. Betting odds are, of course, subject to fluctuations.

Roman Emperor is quoted on the second line of betting at $10 while Allez Wonder is at $26.

Cummings already has 12 Melbourne Cup victories under his belt, the most won by any local or international trainer in Australia's biggest race. Add to this Cummings' many other triumphs on Australian racetracks.

Who Will Win the Melbourne Cup?

On November 3, the first Tuesday in November, Australia comes to a standstill for the running of the Melbourne Cup at 3pm.

The runners for the Cup are yet to be announced. This takes place after the last race on Derby Day, October 31, when the 24 Cup qualifiers are named.

So there's the rest of the weekend and Monday and part of Tuesday to indulge in Australia's favorite racing pastime: picking a Melbourne Cup winner.

So You Think Wins 2009 Cox Plate

So You Think, the Bart Cummings-trained racehorse, has won the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley Racecourse.

Manhattan Rain, trained by Gai Waterhouise, ran second, with Zipping, trained by J D Sadler, third.

So You Think led all the way with jockey Glen Boss, who rode Makybe Diva in her three Melbourne Cup wins, aboard.

Thirteen horses ran in the Cox Plate with Sir Slick scratched from the race.

Hot favorite Whobegotyou was unplaced.
