About French Language http://french.about.com/ French Language Bonne Année ! http://french.about.com/b/2010/01/01/bonne-annee-2.htm <p>Aujourd'hui est le premier jour non seulement d'un nouvel an, mais aussi d'une nouvelle décennie, et d'une nouvelle <b> <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://french.about.com/od/vocabulary/g/epreuve.htm">épreuve</a></b> (mot du jour)<b> </b> linguistique. Les années soixante et quatre-vingts étaient faciles, mais personnellement, je ne suis jamais arrivée à comprendre comment appeler la décennie qui vient de se terminer. Les zéros ? Les années à un chiffre ? Et la nouvelle est à peine plus compréhensible. En anglais on peut éventuellement dire "the teens" (même si les premières années ne sont pas vraiment des "teens") mais en français, ça donne la décennie « adolescente », ce qui est complètement bête. Quand il a poliment refusé de nous suggérer un prix, nous lui avons offert 10 euros (et avons appris plus tard que c'était un peu trop - 5 euros est plus normal). Un <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://french.about.com/library/writing/bl-acronyms.htm">SDF</a> est arrivé le lendemain avec un calendrier plus simple, donc je lui ai offert 3 euros, et c'est seulement là qu'il m'a montré le prix : 4 euros. On attend toujours le facteur et son calendrier.<p> Je sais que le <b><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://french.about.com/od/vocabulary/g/but.htm">but</a></b> (mot du jour) de ces calendriers est de demander des pourboires, mais je n'aime pas qu'on ne donne pas de prix, voire une gamme de prix. Évidemment, ils espèrent que vous donnerez beaucoup, comme nous avec le pompier. Je reconnais que c'était vaseux, mais je cherchais un moyen de partager de bons souhaits sans favoriser une fête, et donc une religion. Je ne voulais offenser personne, et je ne le veux toujours pas. Le projecteur l'a perdu puis retrouvé plusieurs fois tandis qu'il descendait avant de sortir enfin de la mairie, serrer la main du maire, et puis monter dans son traîneau. The <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2009/12/21">winning entry</a>, from Mary Cameron of Leander, Texas, was <b>Entrée: Vous</b>, which you might translate as "Today's special: You." Félicitations ! I like it - very cute and clever.<br /><br /> However, I can't help but feel Ms. Cameron was trying to be even more clever by making a play on the homophonous <em>Entrez vous</em>, which is often used by non-native French speakers to mean "Come in." The problem is that it doesn't. The French verb <em>entrer</em> is not reflexive; the correct way to say "Come in" is simply <em>Entrez</em>. The only time you'd use <em>entrez-vous</em> would be in a question, as in <em>Entrez-vous ou pas ?</em> (Are you coming in or not?)
