Holiday Trading

It’s that time of year again. The markets are slowing down and traders are taking vacations.

You might notice a little more volatility at this time of year, but you might also notice that moves tend to be more random. The reason is because markets “thin out” with less participants around to trade against each other.

This is one problem out of several. I invite you to visit my article on Holiday Trading to get familiar with some of the pitfalls of trying to trade the markets on the holidays.

Using Leverage

If I open an account with $1000 is my margin $1000 or $100,000 with 100:1

I am so glad you asked. This is a topic that beginners are usually confused on. The way trading platforms translate information sometimes is not intuitive if you aren’t used to decoding it.

I’ve put together an article that details using leverage and the way different amounts translate.

It’s a bit of sensitive subject, but I’ve come up with some tips for traders that are either facing a margin call, or have recently experienced one.

Metatrader 5 in Beta

I’ve recently discovered that Metatrader 5 is actually in beta testing.

For those of you that don’t know Metatrader is a universal forex trading platform that is used by multiple brokers. Metatrader 4 came out in 2005 and was widely adopted by forex traders because of the ability to program custom indicators.

Is the EUR/USD Forming a Double Top?

This week we should find out of the EUR/USD is going to stall out and reverse direction in favor of dollar strength.

I’ve been expecting dollar declines to end for soemetime now, and apart from that, I think that there are more problems in Europe that are not being addressed. However, looking at the charts, I could see a case being made for the EUR/USD to exceed it’s near term resistance and to march on up for the holidays.

US Unemployment Rate Tops 10 Percent

The Nonfarm Payroll Report for October 2009 showed a loss of (only) 190k jobs in the US with the unemployment rate spiking to 10.2 percent from 9.8 percent.

So, the two sides of this coin are less jobs being lost, but more people unemployed.

The report appears to have sparked some risk aversion in the forex markets with the US Dollar staging a very minor rally initially and the Yen pairs selling off.

RBA Hikes to 3.5 Percent

The Australian Central Bank hiked interest rates on the Australian Dollar(AUD) by 25 basis points from 3.25 percent to 3.5 percent.

The central bank cited continued return to growth for the Australian economy and moderated inflation. Read more...
