At the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association Spring Conference at Lake Eufaula I took Wm. Hovie Smith out bowfishing. He got a gar and showed me how to clean it. These pictures and instructions will help you clean one if you want to try it. The filets Hovie cut out were good when I sauteed them with butter and lemon.

I usually practice catch and release when bass fishing but sometimes it is catch and hot grease. There is nothing wrong with keeping fish to eat as long as you follow the law. No one should abuse fish populations but keeping everything they catch but most fishermen don't even consider that. Here are some reasons I think keeping some fish is ok. My fish profile sheet on freshwater drum says they are not very good to eat. I have never tried to eat one but Donna Fernstrom disagrees. She says drum are very good and she will target them as food fish in the future.
