What to Wear Now: Denim Shirt

The denim shirt is popping up in so many variations this season -- from utility tunics to lightweight chambray tops -- but I like Banana Republic's (Buy Direct) literal interpretation of the denim shirt. The lived-in feel and authentic features like a button-front and patch pockets give it a stolen-from-the-boys-closet feel. I'd wear mine belted with a wide leather belt and layered over a long-sleeve knit. It's great for skinny black pants or leggings now and white shorts and jeans later. (Photo Credit: Banana Republic)

What is Fashion Week?

Twice a year buyers, journalists, stylists and celebrities descend on New York to attend Fashion Week. In just a few days, I'll be attending the Fall 2010 shows to see what collections designers will be showing for that season. My favorite thing about Fashion Week is, of course, the clothes, but meeting interesting people runs a close second.

What Makes Celebs Wear See-Through on Red Carpet?

Britney Spears wearing see-through on the Grammys red carpet, I get. But what about someone like Gwyneth Paltrow or Uma Thurman: seemingly "normal" celebs who pull a big peekaboo in public? In some cases, like when Barbra Streisand wore sheer pants to the Oscars, the celeb was under the influence of a strong-willed designer. Countdown to Fashion Week: Shopping Diary

I broke 3 of my own shopping rules today:

I shopped on Saturday, the craziest day of the week. (Oh, and did I mention I went to THE MALL!?)
I took a kid with me -- which was great fun -- but 7-year-old girls are much more interested in stuffing and dressing up bears than shopping for Fashion Week.
I putzed around during the season and didn't buy a new coat, and now there's nothing left.

So, you see that even fashion experts make bad shopping calls. The good news is that the whole day was balanced out by the fact that I found an incredible pair of shoes marked down to $15.

Best and Worst of SAG Red Carpet (and Yes, I Hated Mariah's Dress Again)

Overall, I loved the SAG Awards red carpet on Saturday night. Blue dresses and one-shouldered looks dominated the red carpet, and while that may seem like a lot of sameness (the fashion kiss of death) there was actually a huge variety even within those two categories. For example, Christina Applegate wore a soft blue look, while Jenna Fischer pulled off a glittery blue dress. Mariah Carey disappointed in a one-shoulder red dress that must've used the world's strongest double-sided tape to avoid a wardrobe malfunction. And Marion Cotillard pulled off an incredibly chic one-shoulder short white dress that would leave us mere mortals looking silly. (Photo Credits, Both: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Sarah Jessica Parker + Halston = Mega Celebrity Fashion Designer

According to Women's Wear Daily, Sarah Jessica Parker is joining fashion house Halston as the president and chief creative officer. We're all used to hearing about celebs inking licensing deals or even designing their own lines. But this SJP appointment takes the celebrity designer thing to a whole new level. Used to be, the garment biz required experience, smarts and talent. Seems all you need now is star wattage (and possibly money, as the WWD article left the question lingering whether SJP had invested her own money in Halston.) As much as I like Sarah Jessica Parker's style -- although much of her icon status credit should really go to "Sex and the City" wardrobe genius Pat Field -- I can't help but wonder where this trend will lead. Best and Worst of the Golden Globes Fashion

It's not just about dresses. You can totally learn alot about fashion by watching the red carpet. For example, at last night's Golden Globe awards you could have learned:

There's good cleavage and bad cleavage. And Mariah Carey's is the latter.
Just because you are old enough to be a grandma like Glenn Close, doesn't mean you have to look like one.
Horizontal stripes only work if you are Penelope Cruz.

What to Wear Now: Chic Loungewear

You know the winter drill: it's cold, cloudy, snowy or rainy outside and all you want to do is curl up and hibernate. I'm with you. Today is one of those days for me and I'm lounging around the house. Instead of wearing baggy sweats, I like to wear leggings and longer tops; just because I'm relaxing doesn't mean I want to look sloppy. This Zella "Oasis" hooded top (Buy Direct) is right up my alley, with its yummy colors (raspberry or coral), side ruching (really does add to the shape) and thoughtful details (extra long sleeves with foldover hand covers make it perfect to transition from couch to trail.)
