Things to Do on New Year's Day in Washington DC. - January 1, 2010. Looking for something to do on New Year's Day? Many businesses are closed, but there are still a lot of great ways to spend your day on January 1st.
Christmas Light Displays Celebrate the holiday season with a drive or a stroll through one of the Washington, DC area's spectacle of lights at a local park or along the water in Washington, DC, Maryland or Virginia.
Fairfax Frostival - January 1-3, 2010. Dulles Expo Center, Chantilly, Virginia. The new winter-themed family-friendly festival includes interactive games, rides, crafts, storytelling, musical performances, exhibits and more.
National Christmas Tree - Through Jan. 1, 2010. The Pathway of Peace is illuminated each evening from dusk until 11 p.m. Seasonal displays include a Yule log, Santa's workshop and a large-scale model train. Musical performances are performed weeknights from 6-8:30 p.m. and weekends from 4-8:30 p.m. See photos from this year's lighting ceremony.
Christmas at Mount Vernon - Through Jan. 6, 2010. Learn about the Christmas traditions of George Washington and his family, meet historic characters and tour the Mount Vernon Estate by candlelight. Candlelight tours run through Dec. 13.

The Real World: Washington DC on MTV

The Real World: Washington DC premieres on MTV on December 30, 2009 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The reality television series focuses on a group of diverse strangers living together for several months in Washington DC, as cameras document their lives and interpersonal relationships. The show was filmed on location in a 10,800 ft historic mansion located at 2000 S Street, NW in Dupont Circle. Local bars that were used as frequent hangouts for cast members included Halo, Town Danceboutique, and The Russia House. The Water-skiing Santa

Looking for something different to do on Christmas eve? Check out the Water-skiing Santa and His Kneeboarding Reindeer. This unusual annual event features a water-skiing Santa, flying elves, the Jet-skiing Grinch, and Frosty the Snowman performing near National Harbor along the Potomac River. Join in the Sing-along and have a Merry Christmas!

The public can view the event from the shore just south of the Wilson bridge, or by riding on a DC Cruises sightseeing boat. The boats have indoor, heated space, and will feature a pizza lunch, with salad and hot apple cider. Tickets for the cruise must be purchased in advance and are $28/per person, and $14/child (including tax). The cruise takes place on December 24th, and runs from 12-2:30pm.
