Now, from this point on, things get a little bit confusing ...

If you have not yet learned the single and double Japanese candlestick patterns, now is the time to do so, because as Rimmer* said so eloquently, "from this point on, things get a little bit confusing".

The first pair of the Japanese candlestick patterns that require three individual candlesticks (i.e. the triple candlestick patterns) to be explained are the bullish morning star and the bearish evening star. The triple candlestick patterns are not difficult to recognize on a price chart, but their interpretation places significant emphasis upon the relationship between the three individual candlesticks (i.e. the placement of their opens, highs, lows, and closes, with respect to one another), so a good understanding of these concepts is essential to correctly identifying the triple candlestick patterns during trading.

So, without any further ado, here are the explanations of the bullish morning star, and the bearish evening star candlestick patterns.

Japanese Candlestick Patterns - Bearish Thrusting

The last of the Japanese candlestick patterns that require two candlesticks is the bearish thrusting. The bearish thrusting candlestick pattern is similar in appearance to the bearish on and in neck patterns, and is therefore also relatively easy to identify on a price chart (as long as it is not confused with the bearish in neck pattern).

Japanese Candlestick Patterns - Bullish and Bearish Separating Lines

A recent pair of japanese candlestick patterns were the bullish and bearish meeting lines, so it seems appropriate that the next pair are the bullish and bearish separating lines. The bullish separating lines and the bearish separating lines are slightly more complicated than their meeting counterparts, but they are still relatively easy to identify on a price chart, and in the appropriate context they can be used as trade entry and trade exit signals.

EUR to USD or Eurodollar?

The Euro to US Dollar futures market and the Eurodollar futures market have similar names, but they are completely different markets. This can cause confusion for new traders, or even experienced traders that simply do not know what Eurodollars are.

I recently received an email questioning the tick size and tick value of the Euro to US Dollar futures market, and it turned out that the trader was reading the contract specifications for the Eurodollar futures market by mistake. So, I will explain what Eurodollars are, and clarify the contract specifications for both the Euro to US Dollar futures market and the Eurodollar futures market.

What Are Eurodollars?

Eurodollars are US Dollars that are stored outside of the US (such as in Europe, and therefore the name Eurodollars). The reason that Eurodollars exist is that US Dollars that are stored outside of the US are out of the jurisdiction of the US government, and are therefore not subject to any of the regulatory control that normally applies to US Dollars.

Eurodollars have absolutely nothing to do with the Euro currency (the currency of the European Union). Eurodollars were originally stored in Europe, but Eurodollars can be stored anywhere outside the US, and the name Eurodollars equally applies to US Dollars that are stored in Asia or anywhere else (except the US).

Euro to US Dollar Contract Specifications

The Euro to US Dollar futures market (usually known as the EUR futures market) is based upon the Euro to US Dollar currency exchange rate. The contract specifications for the Euro to US Dollar futures market are as follows:

The Eurodollar futures market is based upon the interest rate offered on Eurodollars. The contract specifications for the Eurodollar futures market are as follows:

Expiration date (as of January 2010): March 15th 2010
Exchange : GLOBEX
Currency : USD
Multiplier / Contract value : $2,500
Tick size / Minimum price change : 0.005
Tick value / Minimum price value : $12.50

Note that the tick size and tick value of the Eurodollar futures market will change to 0.0025 and $6.25 respectively when the March 2010 contract becomes the next expiring contract (i.e. on February 15th 2010).
