Inexpensive FinePix AV200 Offered in Five Colors

The specification list for the Fujifilm FinePix AV200 doesn't exactly "wow" you ... until you realize this model is a sub-$100 camera, that is.

The AV200, which is known as the AV205 in some parts of the world, includes 14 megapixels of resolution and can shoot 720p HD video, both of which are very impressive features for a sub-$100 camera. With only a 3X optical zoom lens and a 2.7-inch LCD screen, however, the AV200 isn't perfect.

You'll find the AV200 (Compare Prices) in five body colors: Blue, black, silver, red, and pink. It's a very basic camera, but it also offers a few really nice features.

Canon's High-End G1 X Now Available

Canon's new G1 X digital camera is a high-end fixed lens offering that attempts to offer DSLR photography results without the need for interchangeable lenses.

The G1 X features 14.3MP of resolution with a high-end, large image sensor that will work well for low light photography and that creates high-quality photos.

You'll find a 4X optical zoom lens with the G1 X, so it's not aimed at nature photography, where you'd need a large zoom lens. It has a 3-inch LCD that twists and swivels, as well as a popup flash and an optical viewfinder, which is tough to find on cameras these days. It has plenty of high-end photography control options, making it good for an intermediate photographer.

The G1 X carries a large price tag of $800 (Compare Prices), but I've already seen it for a hundred dollars or more below that price, if you shop around. It's only available in black, just like most of the DSLR cameras it's trying to mimic. The G1 X was announced at CES 2012.

You connect the lens, and you use the camera. Simple enough.

However, there are times when lenses don't work flawlessly. Sometimes the lens just isn't providing the types of image results that you want. Other times, these macro lenses just won't connect properly.

Review of "The DSLR Filmmaker's Handbook" Posted

Even if you're an experienced digital photographer, you may need to use some different techniques to achieve great video results with your DSLR camera.

If you're looking for some good advice on translating your skills to shooting movies, one of the better books I've read when it comes to providing tips for shooting video with a still image camera is The DSLR Filmmaker's Handbook: Real-World Production Techniques, written by Barry Anderson and Janie L. Geyen.

The publishers of this book recently sent me a copy to review. I found that it is well organized and provides a very thorough look at all aspects of shooting HD video. Sony Makes Announcements on Lenses

Sony has announced plans to release 15 new E-mount lenses, along with two lens mount converters, before the end of 2013. These lens mounts will allow Sony NEX DIL cameras to use E-mount lenses.

In addition, Sony has finally announced a release date for its 500mm F/4.0 A-mount lens (pictured here). This super-telephoto lens was first previewed in 2010. It will work well for the Sony SLT-A55V DSLR camera, for example.

No prices were announced for this high-end lens, which should be available sometime after the first quarter of 2012.

Pentax to Offer Two New Tough Cameras

After its announcement of a new DIL camera last week, Pentax has made a few more digital camera announcements this week, including two new "tough" cameras.

The Pentax WG-2 (pictured here) and the WG-2 GPS both offer 16MP of resolution in addition to strong waterproof capabilities. Both units will be available in March, beginning at $350.

In addition, the company made a few other announcements.

Pentax will offer a limited silver edition of its Pentax Q DIL camera, which I reviewed recently. Only 1,600 silver units will be available, but Pentax offered no other information.
Pentax has announced tethering software for the Pentax 645D medium format camera, allowing you to run it from a computer.
Pentax has announced six new lenses for its DSLR camera, Q DIL camera, and medium format cameras, including a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens.
Pentax Ricoh will absorb the Ricoh camera business. Ricoh purchased Pentax in 2011, creating the Pentax Ricoh division to handle photography and maintain the Pentax brand.

Olympus Introduces New DIL Camera: E-M5

Olympus has announced three new cameras, including another impressive looking DIL camera brand.

Previously, Olympus has created PEN-series digital cameras, designed to mimic the style of Olympus PEN film cameras from the past. Now, Olympus has announced the E-M5 camera, meant to conjure memories of the OM series of film cameras.

The E-M5 (pictured here) will be a 16MP camera with interchangeable lenses. It will cost around $1,000.

In addition, Olympus has announced the SZ-31MR ($400), which has a 24X optical zoom lens; and the TG-820 ($300), which is a "tough" waterproof camera. The SZ-31MR is an upgrade to the SZ-30MR, which I reviewed recently.

I'll have more details in my blog on all three of these Olympus cameras closer to their release dates in April. These models are in addition to six Olympus cameras for Europe and five other Olympus cameras for the American market, all of which were announced during CES 2012.

Kodak to Abandon Camera Business

In the wake of its financial problems, Kodak has chosen to end its presence in the digital camera marketplace, effective in the second half of 2012.

Kodak will no longer have ownership of any digital camera, digital video camera, or digital photo frame products, under this decision. It's possible that Kodak could sell its brand name to third-party manufacturers, who could still manufacture Kodak-branded cameras.

Kodak, which filed for bankruptcy recently, says it now will focus on its printing business, as well as continue to develop accessories for other companies' cameras and smartphone products, calling those product areas better opportunities for growth. There was no word on how Kodak will handle product support for those who already own Kodak cameras.

For those of us who grew up around film cameras, this is sad news. Kodak has one of those iconic photography brand names, and it's unfortunate to see the company leaving the photography business.

Canon Introduces New Cameras, Lenses

Canon has introduced four new cameras and three DSLR interchangeable lenses today, expanding both its point and shoot and advanced photography options.

The new photography products are:

PowerShot 320 HS. This camera (MSRP $280) has a 16MP image sensor and WiFi capabilities.
PowerShot 530 HS. With the 530 HS ($350), you'll receive a high-end image sensor and a 12X zoom lens.
PowerShot D20. The D20 ($350) is Canon's second waterproof PowerShot model, as it also offers a 5X zoom lens.
PowerShot SX260 HS. The SX260 (pictured here, $350) will feature a 20X optical zoom lens.
EF 24-70mm lens. This lens ($2,300) has a constant f/2.8 aperture.
EF 24mm and 28mm lenses. Both of these lenses ($850 and $800, respectively) feature ultrasonic autofocus meters.

These cameras and lenses will begin appearing in the market in March and during the following few months. They're in addition to the three cameras Canon announced at CES 2012. I'll have more details on each of these products in my blog at the time of their release.
