Skepticism & Astrology: History of Astrology

Astrology is an ancient belief system, with the earliest records of astrology date back to the Babylonian Empire in the 19th century BCE. Astrology in Babylon did not exist as its own discipline, as it tends to today in the West. Instead, astrology was an integral part of the Babylonian polytheistic religion. This was a time when people believed that our planet was the center of the universe and all the stars and planets revolved around us.

Suzanne Fortin: Atheism a Danger to Religious Freedom

One of the most curious and disturbing calumnies hurled against atheists is the idea that the mere presence of public atheism is a threat to everyone's religious freedom. Apparently, if people have the freedom to not believe in gods and even argue on behalf of not believing in gods, then the freedom of others to believe in various gods is endangered.

No, it doesn't make any logical or empirical sense, but it's a belief held to firmly by a variety of people. This claim is frequently used to argue not just against the permissibility of atheists in the public square, but also secularism and church/state separation. The idea that a secular government is hostile to religious practice is older, yet also clearly related. It's thus hard not to conclude that both positions are adopted not due to the force of any evidence or logic, but simply to rationalize one's desire to have one's religion enforced by the state.

Comment of the Week: Trust in Jesus, Give Up Trying Yourself

When people recommend that you trust in Jesus or God, do they also mean that you should give up trying yourself? That hardly seems reasonable but it does arguably follow -- after all, if you keep trying to help yourself, how can you say that you fully trust Jesus or God to help you? What's worse, there is evidence that at least some Christians approve of exactly that: give up trying to solve your problems so that Jesus can take over.

Christian Supremacy: Pushing the Dhimmitude of Non-Christians in America

In America, the notion of Christian Supremacy encompasses both a moral attitude and a political program. In the moral realm, Christian Supremacy is the idea that Christianity is superior to all other religions, and by extension, that Christians are superior to all non-Christians. Politically, Christian Supremacy is an agenda to get America's political institutions to reflect this superiority by favoring Christians over non-Christians and Christianity over all other beliefs.

Pope John Paul II: Self-Abuse Brings You Closer to God

The double-entendres for this almost write themselves but I'll try to avoid them in order to focus on what I think is a pretty serious issue. Apparently it's "holy" to cause yourself physical pain and distress in ways that would be treated as torture if done to you by another, but certain forms causing yourself physical pleasure is "evil" or "disordered." In my opinion it is precisely that sort of attitude which is disordered -- if not psychologically twisted and unhealthy.

Although it is clear that religion can play an important role in the cause or at least the intensification of violence, could religion and religious language serve a useful purpose in understanding violence and the violent tendencies in both individuals humans and human social groups?

Sacred Sites: Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem - Did Jesus Walk Here to his Crucifixion?

Via Dolorosa is Latin for the 'way of sorrows' or 'way of pain.' It is an important pilgrimage route for Christians in Jerusalem to commemorate the path taken by Jesus when carrying the cross to the site of his crucifixion. There are 14 devotional sites along the way where people stop to pray, none of which existed in the earliest centuries - they are products of medieval Christian practices.

David Limbaugh: Christians Must Fight Secular Values

There are many conservative Christians in America who believe that the American government should be responsible for promoting religious beliefs -- and specifically their beliefs, to the exclusion of all other religious beliefs, whether Christian or non-Christian. Apparently the churches they support can't do the job and the Free Market they usually support introduces far too much competition. So they want the "market" rigged in favor of their religion.

Many critics of Intelligent Design supporters who ask that we "teach both sides" in science classes have analogized this to the Holocaust: should we also teach the "side" of Holocaust Denial in history classes? I never imagined that this analogy might be used in the opposite direction, but that must be the fault of my limited imagination.

Church & State Fundamentals: Redefining Religious Freedom - Special Rights for Religious Believers

Religious conservatives are anxious to expand the power of religious organizations in the United States, even if that means turning basic principles of religious freedom and liberty on its head. Instead of treating religious freedom as a type of general liberty and of freedom of conscience, they wish to treat religious freedom as a unique type of liberty, deserving of special treatment.

Believing in Belief: Any Old God Will Do

Many Americans consider theism so important that they would prefer that one believe in some god, any god, rather than no gods at all. Even people whose theism is weak at best prefer that others believe in some sort of god rather than no gods -- a position that has become known among critics as "believing in belief." This is probably why atheists are regularly the least popular group of all society. Unfortunately, such an attitude about theism and belief reveals a serious problem in one's thinking.

Mike Huckabee on Equality for Gays: Huckabee Opposes Gay Rights, Marriage

Mike Huckabee is a staunch opponent of equality for gays, especially when it comes to marriage rights. According to Mike Huckabee, "I support and have always supported passage of a federal constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. ...My personal belief is that marriage is between one man and one woman, for life." Mike Huckabee's idea for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage doesn't just define marriage as between "one man and one woman," but also as being "for life." Depending on the wording, this would eliminate divorce -- and no-fault divorce has been one of the targets for the Christian Right for decades.

Myth: Atheists Worship Themselves, Atheists Replace the True God with Themselves

Religious theists know that atheists aren't part of their religion and don't worship their god, but a number of religious theists seem to have trouble imagining how a person could be without any religion at all and not worship any sort of god. It's commonly assumed then that atheists replace the 'true god' with something else, and the most popular alleged replacement is the atheist themselves. Thus we have the commonly repeated myth that atheists worship themselves.

President Who Sacrificed Goats: Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan

The line separating religion from superstition is not always easy to see. Many superstitions look an awful lot like religious practices and many religions contain practices which look suspiciously superstitious. This is certainly the case with the daily sacrifice of goats by Asif Ali Zardar, the president of Pakistan. Defenders insist that it's done to provide charitable food contributions for the poor. Why, though, is a "sacrifice" needed -- why not just buy a goat and send it to a butcher? Reports suggest that it really is a sacrifice for the purpose of warding off evil; feeding the poor, then, is at best just an additional benefit.

All or nearly all atheists who have discussed religion with Christians or who have simply been approached by Christians have probably had the surreal experience of being sagely informed about what they believe, how they believe, and even why they believe. Christians may lay claim to a variety of supernatural powers (like healing prayer), but when did they acquire the ability to read the minds of people they don't know and have never met? Does Christianity really provide mind-reading powers?

Godless Children vs. Religious Families: How Can Atheist Parents Balance Them?

Of all of the problems that atheists might experience with their families, those involving their own children are perhaps among the most emotional and difficult to resolve. Many people honestly believe that children require religion and God in order to be raised morally and properly - if atheist parents don't offer that, they will feel compelled to intervene and replace what they believe the parents are failing provide. Atheist parents, though, should do what they think is best for their kids.

Fear, Morality, and Crime

Christians frequently try to link morality, moral behavior, and law with fear -- specifically fear of their god and of going to hell. There's surely a legitimate role for fear in early moral development, but we have to be able to grow beyond mere fear as adults, right? As adults, we need to learn to do the right thing because it's right, not because of fear of what will happen to us otherwise, right?

Well, maybe fear plays a role in moral thinking/behavior throughout adult life. According to recent research, criminal behavior is closely correlated with an ability to experience fear as a child. Apparently, a child even as young as three needs to be sensitive to fear in order to be more likely to grow up to be a law-abiding adult.

Weekly Poll: Is Al Qaeda Winning the War on Terrorism?

After the terrorist strikes on New York City and Washington, D.C., the U.S. retaliated with invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, replacing their governments. I'm sure that Republicans at the time assumed that by now the "victor" would clearly be America, but that's not the case and we are forced to ask ourselves: has America come closer to achieving their goals than Al-Qaeda? Who is really winning the war on terrorism: America or the terrorists?

America is not losing the war on terrorism, but it isn't quite winning, either. The mere fact that America invaded Afghanistan and Iraq -- and is still in both countries -- seems to be more in line with the goals of Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden since that's precisely what he hoped to achieve. He wanted American embroiled in ground wars in those two countries in order to force us to expend so much treasure, lives, resources, and credibility that we would ultimately be forced to abandon the Middle East entirely.

America certainly isn't winning the battle for the "hearts and minds" of people in the Middle East -- just the opposite, actually. Intelligent observers have long noted that the war on terrorism cannot be won like a traditional war, on the battlefield. Battles certainly have to be won, but in the long run the only real victory to be had is in the streets and coffee shops of Arab Muslims, convincing them that the western way is better than bin Laden's way.

Thus far, America seems to be losing that particular conflict and this does not bode well for the future. If America can't even hold on to the support of previously pro-western and pro-American nations like Turkey, then there is little realistic prospect for attracting the support of other Muslim nations like Iraq, Syria, and Egypt. So far it does not appear as though the Obama administration understands how to fight this particular battle.
Weekly Poll: Is Al Qaeda Winning the War on Terrorism? originally appeared on About.com Agnosticism / Atheism on Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at 08:00:00.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

The belief that people can be inhabited or even possessed by evil spirits has been a common feature of many societies. Concomitant with this is the presence of people who can detect and drive the spirits away. Possession of one sort or another can be found in ancient Jewish scriptures, the concepts of possession and exorcism in the Bible are almost entirely limited to the synoptic gospels.

Fair & Balanced Disinformation: Importance of Skepticism, Reason, Criticism

One of the most basic problems which so many atheists have with religion is how it distorts reality and even undermines people's ability to accurately understand reality. Unfortunately, this is a problem which goes far beyond any religion. There are many forces in society which work to distort reality because it is in their interests to do so -- it is in their interests for people to be misinformed, confused, and even afraid. Sometimes, they achieve this while paying lip-service to the values of accuracy, fairness, and skeptical thinking, thus making them harder to unmask.

The mere fact that there are too many books out there to read guarantees that however much you like to read, there are going to be books that you wish you had read and/or think you should have read but simply haven't. In addition to a lack of time, there are also other reasons, like not being able to like it as much as you think you should. So what books are there that you wish you had read but haven't?

Parapsychology: Psychic Defense and the Law

Although it doesn't seem to occur as often as psychic detectives, there have been cases where psychics have helped public defense lawyers. One famous example occurred in Watkins Glen, near Binghamton, New York, when psychic Philip Jordan was retained by the city to measure the 'aura' of prospective jurors in order to determine if they would be suitable for that particular case. The Public Defender did not object. The judges did not object.

One of the objections which Evolution Deniers try to throw at scientists is the question "if humans evolved, why aren't we still evolving?" Even some of those who accept evolution think that homo sapiens will no longer evolve because we use technology and culture to insulate ourselves from the environmental, natural pressures which would otherwise drive evolutionary change. The truth is not only that humans will continue to evolve, but we can actually measure some of the fundamental changes which are occurring.

Comment of the Week: Liberal Faith Insulating Fundamentalist Faith

One of the criticisms which many atheists today make against liberal religion is the extent to which liberal religion can provide cover for more fundamentalist and extremist religion. The basic thrust of this criticism is that however much liberals disagree with the specific policies and ideas of fundamentalists and extremists, they do agree on a number of foundational background beliefs. Liberal defenses of these beliefs -- and especially attempts to exempt these beliefs from criticism -- ultimately aid fundamentalists and extremists.

There is a lot of debate in the Catholic Church about the nature of the Church and how individual Catholics should relate to it. On the one side are those who take an authoritarian stand, insisting that authority in the Church flows from the top down, with Church members obligated to obey the hierarchy's directives in all things.
