Julian Abele, Out of the Shadows

"The shadows are all mine," proclaimed Julian Francis Abele when discussing the architectural drawings for the new Duke University campus. Construction began in 1930 on the Duke Chapel—a time in the United States when an educated African-American architect stayed in the background of the Philadelphia firm run by Horace Trumbauer.

Abele was born on April 30 in 1881. In 1902 he was the first African-American to receive a B.A. in Arch. from the University of Pennsylvania. Today, Duke University is proud to celebrate Abele as the chief designer for many of their campus buildings. And this year Philadelphia itself gives Abele a big birthday present—the Julian Abele Park at 22nd and Carpenter Streets is set to begin construction in 2012. Happy Birthday!

Architecture Updates: April 22 - 28, 2012

Last week we celebrated the birthdays of three prolific architects—Frederick Law Olmsted, Bertram Goodhue, and I.M. Pei. Their lifespans overlapped and so did their styles. Is it my imagination, or does that pyramid shape used by Pei at the Louvre look a lot like the pyramid top of Goodhue's Public Library in Los Angeles?

Who is Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue?

Anyone who has seen a headline in the The New York Times or bought anything from L.L. Bean has seen a design from this American architect.

Born in Connecticut on April 28, 1869, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed the Cheltenham typeface, used for headlines by newspapers like the NYT at the turn of the twentieth century. Even Leon Leonwood Bean set his own name in this typeface when he founded the 1912 mail order business. Goodhue is remembered most, however, for the variety of architecture built during his short lifetime.

I.M. Pei's Birthday

Born on April 26, 1917 in Canton, China, modernist architect Ieoh Ming Pei remains a living example of collaboration and cooperation in the competitive profession of architecture and design. When Pei was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1983, the jury cited his "tact and patience" as qualities that "draw together peoples of disparate interests and disciplines to create a harmonious environment."

Take a tour of Pei's 1973 museum on the campus of Cornell University. The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art will give you an idea of this architect's best work.
