Happy Healthy Skin Month

November is National Healthy Skin Month. There is plenty you can do to celebrate:

Spend a few minutes every day taking care of your skin. Start on a nightly cleansing routine, if you haven't already. Get a good oil-free moisturizer. Keep using sunscreen, even throughout the gloomy winter months.
Learn more about what causes acne and get clear on what doesn't.
If you need help treating your acne, now is a great time to see a dermatologist. Make an appointment this month.
Make the time to take care of yourself, especially as we enter into the busy holiday season.

Acne, Teasing, and the Tween Years

My daughter came home from school in tears yesterday; some of the other girls had been teasing her. Honestly, it broke my heart.

These tween years are rough. Kids this age seem to torment each other mercilessly, for not having the right clothes or the right hairstyle. Unfortunately, this is the age when acne tends to rear its head as well.

The Price You Pay for a Close Shave

The Doctors Weigh in on Baby Acne

One of my earliest aspirations was to become a doctor. Then I came to terms with the fact that blood scares the bejeebers out of me. So, I settled for watching M.D.s on TV instead.

On the TV show The Doctors today, the experts weighed in on newborn acne. This is actually a fairly common problem, but one that is surprising to most new parents (who weren't expecting to deal with acne for at least another 13 years.)

The program did suggest using a very weak vinegar solution as a toner to help speed things along (with the caveat to check with baby's pediatrician before trying this home treatment.)

What you shouldn't do is use OTC acne treatments. These products are designed for older teen or adult skin and can damage baby's delicate skin.

The best bet is to wait the acne out; it will go away on its own. Besides, you're little one is perfect even with acne, right?

Some Question the Safety of Yaz

Today, birth control pills are used for more than just the obvious. Take Yaz, for instance. It has been approved by the FDA to bring relief from PMDD and help control moderate acne.

Yaz is now under fire for what else it may do.

All oral contraceptives may increase a woman's risk of blood clots and stroke. But some believe the combination of estrogen and drospirenone, as in Yaz, carries a higher risk than other birth control pills. At least one study, published in the August issue of the British Medical Journal, seems to support this idea.

Bayer defends its product, though, stating the side effects in question are rare and happen with no more frequency than with other birth control pills. They point to additional studies that show the safety of estrogen-drospirenone combination.

It's been a tough year for the pharmaceutical company, as Bayer was reprimanded by the FDA in February for misleading Yaz advertisements.

Developing serious side effects is a rare occurrence, but you should know the risks of birth control pills. As always, turn to your doctor for advice if you have concerns about your birth control pill.

Should You Give Up Burgers?

Apparently vegans never get acne, at least according to actor Woody Harrelson. He said the switch to a vegan diet cleared his chronic acne in just three days.

It's awesome that Mr. Harrelson found something that worked for him. Problem is, there is no evidence that switching to a vegan diet will clear acne.

Are there people who find relief from their skin problems by switching to a veggie-based diet? Probably. Is it a cure-all for acne? Definitely not.

Besides, I take issue with the the insinuation that acne sufferers have done something to cause their problem. There is still that underlying belief if you have acne, you aren't caring for yourself in some way (you're not clean, you're eating the wrong foods, etc.) This attitude is not only hurtful, it's dead wrong.

Acne is caused by many factors out of our control, like heredity and hormones.

So, if giving up meat and dairy just isn't your thing, don't sweat it. (Remember, there are plenty of people, without acne, who eat meat like it's going out of style.) Finding the right
treatment option is the better alternative.
